China had popcorn as early as the Song Dynasty, but the earliest popcorn was not used for eating, but for divination.

Fan Chengda, a poet in the Southern Song Dynasty, recorded: "Stir-fried glutinous rice with Ibrahimovic, commonly known as Boluo, and northerners call it glutinous rice flower". On the occasion of the New Year, people in the Song Dynasty used popcorn for divination, hoping for a bumper harvest and good luck in the future.
