Enjoying Chinese studies, Mr. Qi Baishi's poem "All the running dogs are under the Ivy League". Who is the Ivy League?

Wei Xu

Xu Wei, a native of Yin Shan (now Shaoxing, Zhejiang), was an outstanding painter and writer in Ming Dynasty. When the word was changed to long, it was called Tianchi Mountain, or Tian Shuiyue, an old man named Ivy, an Ivy Taoist, an Ivy layman, Tianchi Yuyun, Jin Lei, Jin Huishan, Yinshan Buyi, Baigu Mountain and Goose-nosed Shan Nong. Since childhood, he has been smart, resourceful and ambitious. He took part in the anti-Japanese struggle and fought against Yan Song, but he was down and out all his life and was ill-fated and imprisoned for seven or eight years. After his release, he suffered from poverty and illness, and finally he was depressed by selling poems, essays and paintings ... but his painting style was unique. He is good at painting flowers in ink and wash. He is addicted to painting a broken chrysanthemum, which is dripping with ink and wash. Gu Zhuo is elegant, unique in painting style, vivid in characterization, and bold and concise in brushwork, dry, wet and broken. He himself is particularly proud of calligraphy. Claiming that "my book is the first, poetry is the second, writing is the third, and painting is the fourth". (Yuan Hongdao and others praised his calligraphy as "bold" and "vigorous and charming".

Xu Wei was very clever when he was a child. He was admitted to a scholar at the age of twenty, but he never got a promotion. As a young man, he is full of enterprising spirit and hopes to govern the country. He was very thoughtful about military, political and economic affairs at that time, and participated in the struggle against the Japanese pirates along the southeast coast of China. He enthusiastically praised patriotic heroes in his poems, and once wrote "White Deer Original Offering Table" for Hu Zongxian, which won the appreciation of the Ming Emperor. But later, because of some political involvement, his spirit was deeply stimulated and he committed suicide on purpose nine times. The way to commit suicide is amazing. In his later years, his fate was even more embarrassing. Painting became the only way for him to release his inner feelings, and his miserable life made him an artistic genius.

A passage written by Qi Baishi on the inscription of a painting warms my heart every time I think of it. He said:

The paintings of Ivy (that is, Xu Wei), Snow Song (that is, Zhu Da) and Dadizi (that is, Yuanji) can be horizontal and vertical, and I am extremely convinced. I hate not living for 300 years, or grinding ink and paper for you, but you don't accept it. It's also a pleasure to stay outside with an empty stomach.

Long before Qi Baishi, Zheng Xie (Banqiao) carved a seal for his own use, which read:

Running dogs under the ivy league door
