The Italian Tennis Championship was first held in Milan in 1930 and lasted until 1934. 1935 moved to Rome, 1936 to 1949 closed, 1950 resumed, 1969 opened.

The first champion of the Rome Open in Italy was American legend Bill Taiden. He won the first championship on 1930, and in the following years, Bill Taiden's name often appeared in the champion list. Ravel, Willard, Newkirby, Nastase, Rendell and Sampras all won the Rome Open. But only a few people have won the championship more than once, except Ravel, Berg, Rendell and Gomez.
