Wang Ming's life story

Wang Ming (1911~1992) is a famous expert in the history of philosophy and Taoism in China. Before his death, he was a researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, director of the Research Office of the History of Philosophy in China, and an adjunct professor and doctoral supervisor at the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He is also a member of the planning group for the collation and publication of ancient books in the State Council, and the vice president of the Society of Chinese Philosophy History. Because of his outstanding contribution to the study of China's history of philosophy and Taoism, he was approved as an expert enjoying special government allowance.

Wang Ming was born in19110 June10 Huaqiu Village, Pu Yin Town, Yueqing County, Zhejiang Province (now under the jurisdiction of Wenzhou City). As a teenager, he studied in Wenzhou Provincial No.10 Middle School (now Wenzhou Middle School) and Hangzhou Provincial High School (now Hangzhou High School). 1932 was admitted to the Chinese Department of Peking University, where he studied under Ma Yuzao, Qian Mu, Tao Xisheng, Yu Jiaxi, Luo Yong, Huang Jie and Gu Suizhu, and was especially appreciated by Hu Shi. His graduation thesis, A Study on the Significance of Confucianism in Pre-Qin Period, was well received by Hu Shi. 1937 after graduation, he went back to his hometown to engage in anti-Japanese and national salvation propaganda activities.

1939, he was admitted to Peking University College of Literature of National Southwest Associated University for postgraduate study. During this period, Tang Yongtong, Chen Yinque and Tang Lan had great influence on him. On one occasion, he asked Mr. Chen Yinque about the language of the Book of Changes and secular divination.
