Do mussels have pearls?

Some mussels contain pearls, which is related to the species of mussels. Generally speaking, pearls are mainly produced in mollusks such as Hyriopsis cumingii, Pinctada martensii, pintada maxima, Pinctada melanogaster and Pinctada martensii, among which Pinctada martensii is the most common.

Mytilus is invertebrate, mollusk, petabranchia and mussel. It is the general name of all mustelidae mollusks that live in fresh water. There are more than 600 known mussels in the world. There are at least dozens of species of mussels distributed in China, among which the most common ones are Mytilus crested, Mytilus pearl and Mytilus odonta.

Feeding habits of mussels

The food of mussels is mainly unicellular algae, protozoa and organic debris, such as rotifers, flagellates, green eyes, green algae, scenedesmus, navicular algae, dinoflagellate, tetragonal algae, fusiform diatoms, Cladosporium, crustacean debris and plant leaves.

Diatoms are mainly digestible. Mytilus can't actively chase food, but depends on the opening and closing of mussels. The oscillation of cilia and gill cilia in the mantle causes water flow, and food enters the mussel body with the water.

Food enters the coat cavity with water, and the particles move up along the gill filaments to the base of the gill and then forward to the lips. After being selected by the lips, the small particles enter the mouth, the large particles move backwards from the edge of the inner gill, enter the capsule at the junction of the two gills to the back end, and the two shells are slammed out of the body. According to statistics, up to 40 liters of water can flow into mussels every day.
