Tanzhe Temple has a history of 1700 years, and it is the oldest ancient temple in Beijing.

Tanzhe Temple was built in the first year of Yongjia in the Western Jin Dynasty (AD 307). Originally known as Kafka Temple, this temple was named Yun Xiu Temple by Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty. However, because there is Longtan behind the temple and Zheshu on the mountain, it has always been called "Tanzhe Temple" by the people. Known as the folk proverb "Tanzhe Temple comes first, Beijing City comes last".

Tanzhe Temple Tanzhe Temple is large in scale, covering an area of 2.5 hectares in the temple and 1 1.2 hectares outside the temple. The whole building complex fully embodies the aesthetic principles of ancient architecture in China, and there is a central axis running through it, which is basically symmetrical from left to right, making the whole building complex look neat and tidy, with clear priorities and distinct levels. Its architectural forms are temples, halls, pavilions, halls, pavilions, pavilions, buildings, altars and so on. Today's Tanzhe Temple has magnificent halls, quiet courtyards, unique temples, halls, altars and rooms, extraordinary buildings, pavilions, ancient and famous trees, flowers and bamboos all over the temple, rockeries and winding waters set each other off, red walls and blue tiles and cornices set off between Yu Songbai, and the main hall is neat and solemn. Mr. Zhao Puchu, the late president of the Chinese Buddhist Association, once wrote a couplet saying: "The road is long and Xiu Yuan is awkward, and it is the first time to establish a secluded environment."

Tanzhe Temple not only attracts guests from all over the world and tourists from all directions with its numerous historical sites and beautiful scenery, but also has built modern tourist service facilities in recent years, providing one-stop services of transportation, accommodation, catering, sightseeing, entertainment and shopping, making the scenic spot a famous tourist attraction at home and abroad. 1997, with the approval of Beijing municipal government, monks moved in and Tanzhe Temple resumed religious activities.

Long live Wu Zetian In the Tang Dynasty (696-697), Hua Yan, a monk of Huayan Sect, came to Tanzhe Temple to start a mountain to build a temple, "taking Huayan Sutra as a pure business", and Tanzhe Temple became the first established temple in Youzhou area, and Tanzhe Temple flourished.

During the Huichang period of the Tang Dynasty, Li Yan, a native of Tang Wuzong, believed in Taoism. Encouraged by Zhao Guizhen, a Taoist priest, and Li Deyu, a powerful minister, Tang Wuzong ordered the destruction of Buddhism throughout the country. Tanzhe Temple was therefore abandoned.

In the late Tang Dynasty of the Five Dynasties, famous Zen monks came to Tanzhe Temple from the real Zen master, uprooted wasteland and renovated the temple. "Thousands of teachers and disciples taught the Dharma, and Tanzhe Temple flourished", which made Tanzhe Temple out of the shadow of "Wuzong destroyed Buddha" and flourished again. At that time, Tanzhe Temple was changed from Huayan Sect to Zen Sect.

During the Liao Dynasty, due to the prosperity of legalists in Youzhou area and the slow development of Zen, the incense of Tanzhe Temple declined.

In the Jin Dynasty, Zen developed greatly in Zhongdu (now Beijing), and several Zen masters appeared in Tanzhe Temple, which greatly improved the reputation of the temple. In the first year of Tong (11), Jin Xizong went to the Tanzhe Temple to worship Buddha, and funded the renovation and expansion of Tanzhe Temple. This was the first emperor to visit Tanzhe Temple, which made later emperors follow suit, greatly promoting the further improvement of Tanzhe Temple's status and the prosperity of temple incense. Emperor Xizong changed the name of the temple at that time to "Daman Jushi" and allocated funds for the large-scale reconstruction and expansion of Tanzhe Temple, which created a precedent for the emperor to name Tanzhe Temple and the court to pay for the repair of Tanzhe Temple.

During the Dading period, Crown Prince Wan Yan Yungong went to the Tanzhe Temple to worship Buddha on behalf of his father Jin Shizong Wan Yan Yong. Zen master Yu Chong, the abbot at that time, wrote a poem entitled "From Xianzong to Tanzhe Temple" to describe the grand occasion at that time. Later, in the fifth year of Ming Chang (1 194), it was carved into a monument and stood in the temple. Now this monument still exists.

Zen Buddhism flourished in Tanzhe Temple in Jin Dynasty, with Master Lin Jizong and Zen Master Guanghui Tongli as the representatives. Xing Kai is from Huairou County, Beijing today. At the age of 9, he became a monk in Tanzhe Temple, worshiped the true Zen master as a teacher, and studied Lin Jizong's Buddhism. Later, I traveled to Liaodong and Qilu, visited famous ancient temples, and learned Buddhism from eminent monks from all over the world. After I went back, I promoted Zen in Chikulingji, Maanshan. In the early years of Dading, Master Shanhai of Tanzhe Temple led the monks to Chikulinji and respectfully invited them back to Tanzhe Temple as abbots. During his initial tenure as abbot, with the support of the imperial court, Tanzhe Temple underwent a large-scale renovation and expansion in 1 1 year, which made the temples and halls of Tanzhe Temple look brand-new. Since then, the Zen Buddhism in Tanzhe Temple has been revived, and its opening-up has become the recognized leader of Lin Ji Sect of Zen Buddhism in Jinzhong and Zhongdu, making Tanzhe Temple the central temple of Lin Ji Sect. He died in the temple, and after his death, he was honored as a "brilliant Tongli" Zen master by Buddhism.

Princess Miao Yan, the daughter of Kublai Khan in Yuan Shizu in the Yuan Dynasty, went to Tanzhe Temple to become a monk in order to atone for her father. After she passed away in the temple, she knelt in the guanyin temple every day to chant "Li Yin". After a long time, she actually ground an adobe in the temple to a depth of two feet. Today, the brick worship of Princess Miao Yan is still enshrined in the Guanyin Hall of Tanzhe Temple, which is a very precious historical relic of Tanzhe Temple. After the master died in the temple, his tomb tower was in the low tower in front of the temple.

At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, Timur in Bolzigit Luofu, Yuan Shundi believed in Buddhism, especially Tanzhe Temple, which was quite famous in the capital at that time. Yuan Shundi once invited the abbot of Tanzhe Temple, Zen Master Xue Jian, to enjoy the royal feast, and the royal elder sister personally cooked, with unprecedented courtesy.

Yao, an important official in the early Ming Dynasty, was selected as a monk by Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of Ming Dynasty. When the prince of Yan and the separatist princes rose up according to Yao's plan, seized the throne and became the emperor of the Ming Dynasty. After Judy acceded to the throne, Yao was named Zuo Shanshi, the recorder of monks, the abbot of Qingshou Temple, and later the prince, giving him the title of "Xiaoguang" and still taking part in the military and political affairs. After his success, Yao quit his job and went to Tanzhe Temple in Jingxi to live in seclusion. He discusses Buddhism with his old friend the abbot of Tanzhe Temple every day. During this period, the Ming Emperor Judy visited him in Tanzhe Temple. It is said that when Beijing was completed, the designer was Yao, who got a lot of inspiration from the architecture and layout of Tanzhe Temple. Many places in Beijing are built according to the appearance of Tanzhe Temple. The Hall of Supreme Harmony is modeled after the Great Hall of Tanzhe Temple. It is the top of the double-eaved palace, and the ceiling of the wellhead is painted with golden dragons and seals, but it is just a little high. Later, Yao left Tanzhe Temple at the order of presiding over the compilation of Yongle Dadian, but his seclusion in Tanzhe Temple still exists today.

In the Ming Dynasty, since the reign of Zhu Yuanzhang, most emperors and empresses believed in Buddhism, and Tanzhe Temple was renovated and expanded many times with the funds of the imperial court or the donation of eunuchs, which made Tanzhe Temple establish today's pattern.

Tanzhe Temple in Ming Dynasty became a window of foreign exchange at that time. Many foreigners are eager for the name of Tanzhe Temple and come here to study Buddhism. Some of them even died here, among which the most famous ones are Shi Wude in Japan, Devadas in East India and Lian Gong monk in West India.

In the 23rd year of Wanli, Emperor Zhu Yijun of Zongshen appointed Master Daguan as the Qin abbot of Tanzhe Temple. During this period, funded by Empress Dowager Cixi, the mother of Emperor Wanli, Tanzhe Temple was renovated on a large scale under the auspices of Master Daguan. Master Daguan has a close relationship with the imperial court and is often called into the palace to give lectures to the royal family, thus further deepening the connection between Tanzhe Temple and the imperial court.

In the Ming Dynasty, Tanzhe Temple underwent many large-scale repairs and expansions. During Xuande's reign, Tanzhe Temple was rebuilt and expanded because "Queen Cheng Xiao donated the first domestic currency to build the temple". From February of orthodox three years to September of the following year, Tanzhe Temple was rebuilt. With the support of the royal family, temples were expanded and Buddha statues were widely made. During this period, Emperor Yingzong "wrote a letter to quit the altar" and built an altar in the temple at the order of Yingzong. Emperor Yingzong named it "Guangshan Zhaitang", and King Zhu Zhanyong of Jing Yue also built a tall King Kong longevity tower in the temple. In the fourth year of orthodoxy, Ming Yingzong gave five thousand volumes of the Tripitaka to Tanzhe Temple.

In the tenth year of Hongzhi (1497), Li Si prison eunuch Dai Yi paid for the meals and asked Ming Xiaozong to allocate funds to renovate and expand Tanzhe Temple. From March of the second year of Zheng De (1507) to September of the following year, Tanzhe Temple was renovated for another year and a half. "The Temple Hall has been completely renewed, with more than 50 monks and buddhist nun added", which once again expanded the scale of the temple. In the 22nd year of Wanli (1594), Tanzhe Temple was rebuilt, more temples were built, and more than 80 houses, including the abbot courtyard, were built at the expense of Empress Dowager Xiaoding.

During the more than 200 years of the Ming Dynasty, the emperor named the temple several times, so the name of the temple was changed several times. In the first year of Tianshun, Ming Yingzong was renamed Kafukuji, but people still called it Tanzhe Temple.

In the 25th year of Emperor Kangxi in Qing Dynasty (1686), Emperor Kangxi issued a decree to appoint the abbot of Guangji Temple in Fuchengmen, a famous legalist, and monk Zhenhuan, who had been in contact with him for many years, as the abbot of Tanzhe Temple. That autumn, Emperor Kangxi went to the Tanzhe Temple to worship Buddha and stayed there for a few days. He gave Tanzhe Temple 10 the Diamond Sutra, 10 the Pharmacologist Sutra, 1 Sean, 1 Goddess of Mercy for Shoushan Stone, 18 Luohan for Shoushan Stone.

In the thirty-first year of Kangxi, Emperor Kangxi personally allocated10.2 million yuan to repair Tanzhe Temple. Under the personal auspices of the monk Zhen Xuan, it took nearly two years to renovate more than 300 halls from the autumn of the 31st year of Kangxi to the summer of the 31st year, making this ancient temple look brand-new.

In the thirty-sixth year of Kangxi, Emperor Kangxi visited Tanzhe Temple twice, gave the temple the name "Building Yun Xiu Temple" and wrote the temple forehead in person. Since then, Tanzhe Temple has become the largest royal temple in Beijing.

In the thirty-seventh year of Kangxi, Emperor Kangxi inscribed a plaque for the archway, and presented Tanzhe Temple with osmanthus 12 barrels and 8 poles of Dendrocalamus gracilis, which are the "gold-inlaid jade" and "gold-inlaid jade" bamboos we saw in the temple today.

In the thirty-eighth year of Kangxi, Emperor Kangxi appointed Zhi 'an, a famous monk and lawyer, as the abbot of Tanzhe Temple, and gave Tanzhe Temple four gold-plated sword-light kiss belts, which were installed on the top of Daxiong Hall. Today, these four golden kisses are still intact.

Yong Zhengdi, who lived in seclusion during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, also made a special trip to the Tanzhe Temple to worship Buddha.

In the seventh year of Qianlong (1742), Emperor Qianlong visited Xingtan Zhesi Temple for the first time, and "gave a thousand taels of silver, nine plaques, two couplets, two poems, one axis and five pictures in one hall". Tanzhe Temple is full of Qianlong Mo Bao. In the ninth year of Qianlong, Emperor Qianlong presented the Imperial Classics and his calligraphy to Tanzhe Temple.

Like his predecessors, Emperor Jiaqing believed in Buddhism. I also went to Tanzhe Temple to worship Buddha and enjoy the scenery. Now he has a five-character poem "A First Visit to Yun Xiu in Tanzhe Temple".

1929 When Chiang Kai-shek came to Beijing, he made a special trip to Tanzhe Temple for pilgrimage.

1950, Beijing Bureau of Landscape Architecture took over Tanzhe Temple. After a little renovation, it was opened to tourists as a scenic spot and became one of the first seven parks in Beijing.

1956, Chairman Zhu De of the National People's Congress inspected Tanzhe Temple and instructed relevant departments to build the road from Mentougou to Tanzhe Temple to provide convenient transportation for tourists.
