Suzaku is one of the four spirits in ancient China mythology, which originated from the worship of stars in ancient times. It is a southern god who represents Emperor Yan and the seven nights in the south. It separates from the gossip and lights the fire of the five elements, symbolizing Lao Yang in the four elephants, summer in the four seasons and the southern heaven. In Chapter 12 of Zhou Li, it is strictly stipulated that only the emperor can use one of the three patterns of the sun, the moon and the stars, and the princes can use the other nine dragons.

At present, the original origin of Suzaku is still inconclusive. Based on the investigation of cultural relics and the arrangement and study of astronomical data of Oracle Bone Inscriptions unearthed in Yin Ruins, it is found that the images of Suzaku and other four elephants have been produced as early as Oracle Bone Inscriptions in Shang Dynasty. ?

Later, cultural relics recording the image of Suzaku were unearthed in the early Western Zhou Dynasty, but there were only four elephants at that time, namely Black Dragon, White Tiger, Suzaku and Lu Shen. Among the four known images, the "Xuanwu" image has not yet formed.

At present, the earliest records are found in Oracle bones unearthed in Yin Ruins: "Ding Sibu, Zhen Bird, San Yang, San Dolphin and San Dog", which means "Ding Siwei's divination requires the emperor to sacrifice Zhu Bird, San Yang, San Pig and San Dog". In addition, the lacquer box of the tomb of Zeng Houyi in the Warring States period unearthed in Sui County recorded the names of 28 huts and four elephants for the first time, and the names of four elephants such as Suzaku were also impressively listed.
