Brief introduction of Dunhuang Taoist collection

Dunhuang Taoist Collection is a set of five-volume Taoist ancient books, edited by Li Guofan and published by the Microform Center of the National Library of China in Beijing, 1999.

Content 1900, Wang discovered more than 50,000 documents, paper paintings, silk paintings, embroideries and so on from the 4th century to1century in a cave in Dunhuang, Gansu. This cave is the famous "Tibetan Sutra Cave". Most of the documents found in caves are written and a few are carved. About five-sixths of them are written in Chinese, and the others are in ancient Tibetan, Sanskrit, Qilu, Sogdian, Hehe and Qiuci. The contents of the literature are mainly Buddhist scriptures, including more than 500 kinds of Confucian classics, novels, poems, historical records, cadastres, account books, calendars, deeds, letters, records, Taoist scriptures and Taoist books, about half of which are early Taoist classics not included in the orthodox collection. The discovery of Dunhuang Taoist scriptures not only makes up for the lack of orthodox Taoist scriptures, but also provides valuable information for the study of Taoist history in Hexi area.

There are two main aspects in the arrangement of Dunhuang Taoist scriptures. One is to record scattered Dunhuang Taoist scriptures as comprehensively as possible, and the other is to publish clear plates and relatively accurate records. Japanese scholar Keizo Obuchi first tried to collect and sort out Dunhuang Taoist documents. 1960, Obuchi Keizo first published the Catalogue of Dunhuang Taoist Scriptures, which recorded 373 Dunhuang Taoist Scriptures. Through unremitting efforts, the number of Dunhuang Taoist scriptures recorded by him increased to 496 in 1978, and the Catalogue of Dunhuang Taoist Scriptures was published in 1979, and more than 300 photocopies were published. However, with the continuous publication of Dunhuang documents in various countries and places, the number of Dunhuang Taoist scriptures is also increasing. Therefore, it is very necessary to supplement Obuchi's two masterpieces. Dunhuang Taoist Collection, edited by Li Defan, absorbed the newly published achievements and photocopied more than 500 books, which is of considerable value to supplement the shortcomings of Dayuan's two works.
