Mazu's name is Molinyang (960-987), a native of Meizhou Island, Putian, Fujian.
Mo Niang was smart since she was a child, read from memory, and was proficient in literature and meaning. At the age of thirteen, she accepted the mysterious secret method and became a famous witch in the local area, saving people from danger and salvaging shipwrecks.
Legend has it that Yongxi in Song Taizu ascended to heaven on September 9th. Due to the nostalgia of local villagers for Mo Niang, some people say that she often shows her spirits and is regarded as a god.

Because of the wide legend of saints, they were honored as Mazu and Year of the Horse (the highest honorific title for women in Fujian and Taiwan), and upgraded from the land god to the sea god. In addition, emperors of past dynasties have repeatedly dubbed her "Tian Fei", "Madam", "Emperor" and "Goddess of Heaven". Mazu has not only become an omnipotent goddess on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. And spread to Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and America, becoming the most famous sea god in the world.
Every year, on the 23rd of March, Mazu's birthday, and on the 9th of September, believers hold a grand temple fair. In addition to divination, Taiwan Province people and overseas Chinese also took this opportunity to send Mazu back to her mother's family, Meizhou Island, to worship her ancestors in the temple and hold various cultural activities.
