The flora and fauna of Ascension Island

There used to be eucalyptus, St. Helena ebony, St. Helena redwood and St. Helena olive on Ascension Island, but after long-term destruction, the original vegetation is now very scarce. There are bamboo forests on the top of Green Mountain, as well as wild pine trees, sunflowers, orchids, cacti, mosses, lichens and ferns.

The main wild animals on Ascension Island are green turtles, lizards, crabs, terns, petrels and frigate birds. Terrestrial birds include canaries, partridges, starlings, sparrows and waxbills. Mammals on the island include donkeys, goats, mice and dogs and cats kept as pets. There are sharks, tuna and other marine fish in the waters near Ascension Island.
