Wuhai Vocational and Technical College, founded in 2004, is a full-time public higher vocational college approved by the People's Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and filed by the Education Department of the Autonomous Region. The college was identified by the Education Department of the autonomous region as the first batch of autonomous region-level demonstration higher vocational colleges, autonomous region-level modern apprenticeship pilot colleges, autonomous region-level independent enrollment qualification higher vocational colleges, and undergraduate vocational education pilot higher vocational colleges.

In recent years, according to the economic and social transformation and industrial structure adjustment of Wuhai city and the region, the college actively adapts to the needs of regional economic and social development and constantly adjusts and optimizes the professional structure and layout. On the basis of only offering engineering majors in the early days of the school, 49 higher vocational majors in eight categories, including chemical engineering, coal, electromechanical, electric power, construction, management, education and nursing, have been built.
