What's the difference between thanking God and thanking God?

It must be to thank God (imperative sentence, thank God) and thank God for not being there.

Thanks a lot exists, which means thank you very much. Thank you is a noun, and many are adverbs. But thank God is no good, because God is a noun, so thank you is a verb and can only be a prototype.
