Description of Longhua Temple

Longhua Temple, located in Longhua Street in the southern suburbs of Shanghai, is the oldest and largest ancient temple in Shanghai.

The name of Longhua Temple comes from the story of Maitreya Bodhisattva becoming Buddha under Longhua tree in Buddhist scriptures. It is said that Longhua Temple was built by Sun Quan for his mother in the Three Kingdoms period, and it has been 1700 years since. However, there are historical records that Longhua Temple was built in the second year of Taiping Xingguo in the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 977).

In the third year of the Northern Song Dynasty (A.D. 1066), Longhua Temple was renamed as "Kongxiang Temple", and there are still some remains of "Kongxiang Temple". During the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1403- 1424), the original name of Longhua Temple was restored. In the second year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1574), it was given the name "Daxing National Wanshou Huaci Temple", and the name of the temple is still Longhua Temple.

1953, the Shanghai Buddhist Association copied the Buddha statues of various temples, rebuilt the temples and built a new Buddhist scripture building. Peach Blossom Garden in the west of the temple was turned into Xue Hua Park in the 17th year of the Republic of China (1928), and later renamed Longhua Park, which is now a part of Longhua Martyrs Cemetery. 1959, Longhua Temple was listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Shanghai.
