Is feng shui related to Taoist culture?
Geomantic omen theory is a series of propositions and theories about the location, orientation, layout, construction, and date selection of houses (yangzhai) and cemeteries (yinzhai) in ancient China. It is a way for people to choose their living environment. It should be acknowledged that the theory and application of Feng Shui is related to Taoism, but it is obviously inappropriate to say that Feng Shui is a Taoist culture!
This is because the word "feng shui" can also be called "feng shui" or "geography". The word "geography" first appeared in the Book of Changes. It can be said that Feng Shui belongs to the Book of Changes.
The concept of "Yin-Yang Theory", the guiding ideology of Feng Shui theory, originated in summer and matured in Zhou Dynasty. The word "Yin and Yang" first appeared in the "Gong Liu" chapter of The Book of Songs.
In addition, the philosophical circle also believes that the main part of Feng Shui theory, the "Five Elements Theory", was first seen in Shangshu. Red silk.
What I want to say is that from the above analysis, it can be seen that several components of Feng Shui theory, such as Qi Theory, Yin and Yang and Five Elements, are not entirely derived from Taoist culture. The emergence and development of geomantic omen theory was laid by talents, strong academic atmosphere, active philosophical thoughts and rich geographical works in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. Therefore, I think the rise, development and maturity of China's geomantic theory are related to various schools of thought such as Confucianism, Taoism, Legalism and Yin and Yang School.
Of course, it should be admitted that some famous Taoist figures are inextricably linked with the development and practice of China's geomantic theory. For example, Huangshi, also known as Huang Shigong, was the author of the first recorded Feng Shui classic in China. Later, it was said that he became an immortal and was accepted as a sacred book by Taoism. In addition, it is undeniable that Guo Pu, the originator of Feng Shui, is also closely related to Taoism. The development of geomantic omen theory also benefits from Taoism to a great extent. Many Taoist names also have an influence on Feng Shui. For example, the pattern of "Four Spirits" in Feng Shui also comes from Taoism, and Qinglong, Baihu, Suzaku and Xuanwu are originally the protectors of Taoism in four directions. In the folk, Taoist priests often serve as feng shui masters, which easily give people the illusion that feng shui comes from Taoism.
So, why is Feng Shui theory so closely related to Taoism? I think, first, Confucianism is the most orthodox Sect in China. However, the theory of geomantic omen can't be elegant, so if it wants to develop, it must be incorporated into the traditional Taoist schools in China. Secondly, Taoism is the state religion of our country, and the theory of Feng Shui can be carried forward with the help of the powerful power of Taoism among the people, which is of great benefit to its spread!
Feng Shui aims at "based on the world, pursuing a smooth life and prosperity from generation to generation", while Taoism aims at "cultivating immortals to get rid of the secular". The different purposes also show that there are essential differences between the two!
In short, I personally think that it is obviously not established, appropriate and inappropriate to regard the theoretical culture of Feng Shui as Taoist culture only!
