How ugly were the four ugly women in ancient China?

The first ugly girl: Mo Mu in ancient times.

According to legend, Mo Mu looks like a hag and is extremely ugly, so she is regarded by later generations as the first of the four ugly women in ancient China. But if we want to talk about Mo Mu's virtue, she is a model for women in China.

Qu Yuan praised Mo Mu for her superior wisdom in the Nine Chapters of Chu Ci, so she was appreciated by our ancestor Huangdi Xuanyuan Huangdi and married her. Mo Mu didn't live up to the love of the Yellow Emperor. She gave moral education to women.

She saw people wearing skins in winter and leaves strung together in summer, and she invented reeling, weaving it into silk and dyeing it into various colors to make clothes. This solves the problem that people are naked and indecent. In order to thank Mo Mu for this great invention, later generations honored her as the "First Silkworm Woman".

Mo Mu is not only a model of moral education, but also a "good wife" of the Yellow Emperor, who helped him defeat Yan Di and kill Chiyou.

The second ugly girl: Zhong Lichun.

People often use "seemingly salt-free" to describe ugly girls. This "salt-free" refers to Zhong Lichun, an ugly girl in the salt-free county of Qi State (now Dongping County, Shandong Province) during the Warring States Period. The book says that she is unmarried in her forties, extremely ugly, with a sunken head and deep eyes, a big belly, a stiff nose and throat, a fat top and little hair, and a painted skin. But she cares about national affairs and is ambitious.

At that time, Qi was in power because of political corruption. In order to save the country and people, Zhong Lichun risked being beheaded to remonstrate with Qi Xuanwang. When Qi Xuanwang first met Zhong Lichun, he thought it was a monster. However, when Zhong Lichun stated Qi Xuanwang's misdeeds and pointed out that if he didn't pull back from the brink, the country would be destroyed, he was greatly moved. He took Zhong Lichun as his mirror, married her and made her his queen.

The third ugly girl: Meng Guang in the Eastern Han Dynasty.

According to Liang Hongchuan of the later Han Dynasty, Meng Guang was black and fat, with a vulgar face. Because of his ugliness, he is in his early 30 s and hasn't married yet. But this Meng Guang said to his parents: "I only marry Hongliang, and no other men marry!" Hongliang was a very famous person at that time. He is a handsome and elegant man. Many local dignitaries and aristocratic families want to marry their daughters to him.

So the local people laughed at Meng Guang's words, saying that she was a toad trying to eat swan meat. But Hongliang took a fancy to Meng Guang's character and decided to marry Meng Guang. Although Hongliang is very learned, he doesn't want to be an official. So after marrying Meng Guang, she lived in seclusion in the mountains of Baling, and then moved to Wudi (now Suzhou, Jiangsu).

They work together and respect each other. When Hongliang works every day, Meng Guang always prepares food early. When Hongliang came home, Meng Guang held the plate in his hands, raised it as high as his eyebrows, and respectfully gave it to Hongliang. So they share weal and woe and grow old together. Later generations used "Qi Mei as an example" to describe the love between husband and wife.

The fourth ugly girl: the daughter of Ruan Dewei in the Eastern Jin Dynasty.

The ugliness of Ruan's daughter can be known from the story of the wedding night. Ruan's daughter's groom was a celebrity Xu Yun at that time. Xu Yunman thought that with his fame, he must have married a great beauty. But when he opened his handkerchief, he was frightened and ran out of the bridal chamber. A friend advised Xu Yun: Don't just look at Ruan's appearance, but look at his character and knowledge. So, Xu Yun crustily skin of head came to the bridal chamber, but at the sight of Ruan's terrible appearance, she was too scared to go out again.

Just then, Ruan Nv grabbed Xu Yun and said, "Women have four virtues, but I just don't have beauty. A scholar needs a hundred lines, how many lines can you account for? " Xu Yun said, "I have a hundred lines." Ruan added, "As far as I know, morality comes first, and you only like women's beautiful faces. How can you say that you have everything? " Xu Yun was speechless. Later, Xu Yun gradually felt that Ruan's character was beyond the reach of ordinary women, so he fell in love for life.

This explains why appearance and soul can't be equated. There is a saying in the countryside: an ugly daughter-in-law is a treasure at home. In other words, an ugly wife makes people feel at ease in character. Because of her ugliness, she is bound to be diligent in housework, not to participate in gossip, not to "stand by the door and follow the pedestrians", and not to show off at the fair. Thin land can make people diligent!
