What is the process of becoming a monk?
Becoming a monk and being ordained are inseparable, and becoming a monk is bound to be ordained. Only when a person is formally ordained can he obtain the real qualification of becoming a monk. Generally speaking, Buddhist monks in the Han Dynasty generally have to go through three commandments: the first is Misha's commandments; The second time is the bhikkhu ring; The third time is the talisman of the Bodhisattva. These three commandments are collectively called "three altars to preach precepts".
Becoming a monk for the second time is the fundamental precept of becoming a monk. In other words, after accepting the monk's precepts, you have the formal qualification to become a monk.
To become a monk and be ordained, certain conditions must be met: first, the ordained person must be at least 20 years old and have been ordained by the novice monk. Secondly, there must be enough presiding monks and witnesses at the ceremony.
Buddhism in the Han Dynasty generally requires "ten teachers" or "three teachers and seven certificates". The three divisions include: master division, professor division and karma division (karma refers to confessions, circulars and other things in Buddhism). Three divisions are indispensable. These seven cards were witnessed by seven monks who were forbidden by monks. If the number of "three teachers and seven certificates" is not enough or one of them violates the precepts, the ceremony will not take effect.
Finally, the ceremony of giving a monk a ring will be held in a specific place, that is, the "ring altar."
The procedure of abstinence and initiation ceremony for monks is as follows:
First, the temple rang the bell and called the monks and ordained people to Jietai Temple. Then the tenth division went to the altar from the east lower steps of Jietainan, circled the Buddha statue from east to north at the top of the altar, and took seats in turn. Other monks sat in the lower and middle layers of the annular altar in turn, while the ordained stood on the Dongtai steps in the south of the altar, facing west.
At this time, Professor Wei Yi instructed the ordained person to bow down to the Buddha statue for three times, then bowed to the ten teachers and monks one by one, and then knelt on the straw mat with his hands folded to recite the precepts: "Dade misses me so-and-so, so I invite Dade to become a monk, and hope Dade can become a monk for me.
Because of my virtue, I have to be merciful and wear an anklet. "Then, the professor walked to the front of the altar and explained the names and styles of six items, such as clothes necessary for becoming a monk, to the ordained person. He asked again, "Is there such a mantle today?" One by one, the ordained people answered, "Yes".
Then, the professor walked down the altar and explained the names and styles of six items, such as clothes necessary for becoming a monk, to the ordained people. And asked, "Do you have this cloak today?" One by one, the ordained people answered "Yes".
Later, the professor secretly asked the ordained person about "thirteen difficulties" and "sixteen lightness" respectively. "Difficult" refers to the evil things that can't be banned, and "lightly covering" refers to the fact that the body has some defects, not doing evil things. The appointed person should answer the professor's inquiry honestly.
Among these "difficulties" and "light covers", the ordained person is not allowed to be ordained as long as he meets one of them. If all the exams are passed, the professor will explain to the monks that the ordained person is "clean". After the monks agreed, the ordained man came in, worshipped the Buddha statue, ten masters and monks again, then climbed to the top of the altar and asked for a circle in front of the karmic master.
On the altar, Master Karma once again asked the ordained person whether he had committed "difficulty" or "light cover". After asking, the karma master began to do "four white karma". The word "white" here means repentance, that is, the karma mage should explain what he just asked to the Lord Dade and other monks and ask them to indicate whether they agree or not. I asked for instructions four times, so I called it "four white karma".
The last karma was over, and all the monks didn't speak, which means it's all over. At this time, the master of karma announced that he could give this person an anklet. After being ordained, the ten divisions and the monks went down to the altar in turn, and the fasting ceremony of the monks ended.
Buddhist precepts
Monk is the abbreviation of Sangha, which means "the masses". Buddhists are divided into men and women who stay at home and men and women who become monks. Monks and nuns must form a sangha in groups of at least four. Monks are individuals composed of men and women who become monks. Monks are called monks according to the Ten Commandments and monks according to the Foot Commandments. A woman who becomes a monk is called Shamini by the Ten Commandments and Bhikuni by the Foot Commandments.
According to the Buddhist system, shaving one's hair, dyeing clothes and getting ordained are the necessary conditions for obtaining the qualification to become a monk. After receiving the precepts, monks should live a quiet and frugal life according to the precepts.
These commandments include no killing, no stealing, no lewdness, no lying, no tongue twister, no swearing, no talking, no drinking, no painting, no singing and dancing, no sitting on a spacious bed, no accepting gold and silver treasures, no trading, no fortune telling, no cheating in performing magic tricks, no robbing and threatening others, and so on.
Monks can't pray for people to eliminate disasters, nor can they pray for God's forgiveness. He is not a bridge between man and god, but a monk for liberation. Monks' energy is mainly used for study and practice. The content of learning and practicing is mainly the teaching and doctrine of Buddhist scriptures, and its methods vary from sect to sect.
The monks living in Wutai Mountain earnestly observe the precepts, not only devote themselves to study and practice, but also have the responsibility to protect and maintain the temple.
