What is Hu Shi's wife like?

Hu Shi's wife, Jiang Dongxiu, was born in Jingdejiang Village on 1890, and her father, Jiang Shixian, died at an early age. Her mother, Lu Xianying, is a descendant of the temple owner Lu Chaorui (exploring flowers) and Lu Peifen's father and son Hanlin. Jiang Dongxiu was born in an official family, but he didn't get much education because of the shackles of feudal ethics. He has only read books for a few years and is familiar with writing at first. In China society after the Revolution of 1911, she was just an ordinary female surname, but after all, she was the wife of a generation of celebrities Hu Shi. So they are the lucky ones among millions of unfortunate women. "Hu Yuan's name hangs over the universe, and so does his wife's feet." It's no surprise that an advocate of the new culture movement married a young lady with little feet in the country. Therefore, "Mrs. Hu Shi's little feet" became one of the "seven wonders" in the history of the Republic of China.

The combination of Jiang Dongxiu and Hu Shi has a dramatic process. Jiang Dongxiu and Hu Shi are relatives, and Hu Shi's aunt is Dong Xiu's aunt. On one occasion, Jiang Dongxiu's mother went to visit relatives at Hu Shi's aunt's house in Wangchuan, Jixi, and saw the god game. Hu Shi happened to go to his aunt's house with his mother. Jiang Mu took a fancy to Hu Shi's beauty and cleverness, and said that he would give his daughter Dong Xiuxu to him. However, Hu Shi is quite worried: First, because Dong Xiu is one year older, Jixi has a saying that "men can be ten years older and women can't be one year older"; Second, because the winter show belongs to a tiger, people who think it is a tiger are very hard, especially the "tigress". Third, due to the prosperity of the Chiang family, the Hu family fell behind in the middle. Some people worried that the rise and fall were disproportionate, so they refused to express their views. Because Jiang Mu wanted to achieve this marriage, he asked Hu Shi's uncle to teach Hu Xiangjian, who he personally met in Jiangcun, as a matchmaker, and Dong Xiu was a student of Hu Xiangjian. In order to fulfill this happy event, Hu Xiangjian made a thousand promises in front of Hu Mu, who agreed to let him have a look at Dong Xiu's "eight characters". The red paper "eight characters" was sent, and the fortune teller inferred; Dong Xiu's life is suitable for men, and the two zodiac signs get along very well, so we can't rush into it, and female universities won't hinder it. Mother Hu folded the red paper and put it in the bamboo tube in front of the kitchen god. In that bamboo tube, several "eight characters" were originally selected. After a while, the house was safe and there was nothing written on the wall. Mother Hu worshiped the Kitchen God devoutly, took down the bamboo tube and shook it. Then she spread out a figure of eight with chopsticks. This is Jiang Dongxiu's, a "godsend". At that time, Hu Shi, who was only 14 years old, and Jiang Dongxiu, who was 15 years old, were lifelong events, so they were decided under my mother's orders, under the words of the matchmaker, with the blind gathering of fortune tellers and the blessing of the kitchen god.

After Jiang and Hu got engaged, Hu Shi went to Shanghai and the United States to study. They have been married for more than ten years. At this time, rumors spread everywhere in my hometown; Some people say that Hu Shi has a female friend in America, some people say that he married a foreign girl, and some even say that he gave birth to a child. However, Jiang Dongxiu's thought not only didn't fluctuate because of this, but also made an attempt to expand foot binding. Her free action was praised and encouraged by Hu Shi.

19 17 Summer, Hu Shi returned to his hometown to visit his mother after studying abroad and agreed to get married this winter vacation. He wanted to meet Dong Xiu first, but he didn't, which caused some jokes. Hu Shi's Diary says ... I went to Jiangcun myself. His (her) family invited me to drink. After the banquet. I asked to see Dong Xiu. His (her) brother Yunpu accompanied me outside his (her) bedroom. He came into the room and said, I'm sitting outside reading and waiting. I see people secretly crowded upstairs and downstairs, all wanting to see the' play'! Juaner came out of the nursery, embarrassed on her face, and asked seven aunts to persuade Dong Xiu. My aunt (my mother's aunt, Dong Xiu's aunt) came out and invited me in. Dong Xiu hid under the covers with the sheets down. Aunt tried to open the curtain forcibly, but I stopped him (her) with my hand and went out. At this time, if you hit the sedan chair and leave, or move out of the inn to rest, it will be stiff at that time. I thought at that time, this must not be Dong Xiu's fault. It's the fault of the old family and old habits ... when I got home, people asked me if I had seen the new guy. I'm just saying, yes, it's good. I told my mother that she was angry, but I advised him (her) not to blame Dong Xiu wrongly. But when the uncle who went with him knew about it, the legend spread like wildfire. I laugh when people ask me. Later, Dong Xiu came to see my mother in autumn and told her about it. It was an ancient family that got in our way ... I still remember that it was a crisis moment ... It was already the 20th century. A 28-year-old girl hid in bed and put down the curtains, ashamed to see her husband who had been engaged for 13 years, but it had to be spread as an anecdote at that time. 19 17 winter vacation, Hu Shi went home from Peking University and got married in a civilized way. He personally wrote two couplets: one is "In the thirteenth year of the Old Testament, it traveled about 70,000 miles"; The other pair is the "30-night Moon" (the wedding day is 30 days in the Gregorian calendar, and the lunar calendar 1 1 month 17), but I didn't think about it at the moment. At this time. Next to him, his younger brother Yu Jiao, nicknamed "Crazy", is not famous, but has extraordinary talent. He blurted out "I miss the seven-year-old groom" and aligned the picture skillfully and humorously. Hu Shi felt very good and wrote it accordingly. At the wedding, they broke the old-fashioned etiquette, but the marriage certificates of the bride and groom were stamped with each other, and the witnesses were also stamped with each other. The two sides exchanged gold rings, the witness spoke, the groom spoke, and there was no worship. Bow instead of kowtow. This kind of wedding, at that time, in the ancient isolated mountain village, really kicked off something new.

In the second year after marriage, Jiang Dongxiu came to Beijing to take charge of household chores for Hu Shi. Although she is a small-footed woman deeply poisoned by the old feudal ethics, she is quite brave, talented, decisive and manly. She found that Hu Shi was having an affair with Cao Peisheng. Instead of gently persuading Yin, she seized Hu Shi's characteristics of cherishing his reputation and adopted an offensive strategy, making a scene and making an inch. Once he picked up a paper cutter and threw it at Hu Shi's face. Although it was missed, it forced Hu Shi to sever the relationship with Cao Peisheng. (4) Professor Liang Shiqiu of Peking University wants to divorce his wife after she becomes famous. Liang's wife is honest, weak and unable to resist. Jiang Dongxiu heard about it and stood up for her. Take Liang's wife to her home and encourage her. Finally, she went to the forensic doctor for a lawsuit, and Jiang Dongxiu personally appeared in court to defend her. As a result, Liang Shiqiu lost the case.

194 1 year when Jiang Dongxiu went back to visit relatives in Jiangcun. It is found that the road surface in Yangtaoling area on the ancient road from Shangzhuang to Jiangcun has been in disrepair for a long time, and it is very difficult to walk. After she returned to Jiangcun, she generously built three roads near Yangtaoling and asked the supervisor for acceptance. Until now, the locals have long remembered it.

During his stay in War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Hu Shi went to the United States and Jiang Dongxiu took refuge in Shanghai. She learned the truth about the revolution in the People's Liberation Army and guerrilla areas and was very sympathetic to the revolutionary people. /kloc-in the spring of 0/945, she returned to Shangzhuang, Jixi. At that time, there were both the national army stationed in Shangzhuang, the New Fourth Army and the guerrillas living in Shangzhuang. Anhui Baosi Regiment is stationed in the town and often goes to Shangzhuang to arrest people. Comrade Wang Muhai, a guerrilla, asked her for help, and she always picked up her business card to protect her. Comrade Wang Biying lives in Wangjiazhuang, an old revolutionary base area. The national army burned down his house and ordered the arrest of his mother. The queen mother had nowhere to live, so she fled to her home. She accepted it gladly and granted asylum.

Although Jiang Dongxiu has lived in other places for many years, her younger generation is still not short of education. She heard that Sheng Huiniang often lost money, and learned that Moon Fairy and Shiquan were quarrelling as a bee, so she personally wrote to Uncle Ren Jin, asking him to reprimand him. Tell them to strictly abide by the rules, cherish their reputation, and don't ruin their voice. If "I hear gossip again, I won't send him money".

After Jiang Dongxiu married Hu Shi, he always advised Hu Shi not to take the political road and be an official, hoping that he would study hard. However, Hu Shi still went against his wife's advice and got involved in politics, becoming a "pawn crossing the river". 1938, Chiang Kai-shek sent two telegrams to Hu Shi, asking him to be the American ambassador. Hu Shi could not simply refuse, so he had to do it. He wrote to Dong Xiu to prepare her mentally. The letter said: "I have been here (giving lectures in Europe and America at this time) for more than ten days, and I met a thing of' making a fortune in Liangshan' (that is, Jiang asked him to be the ambassador to the United States). I know you must be very unhappy to hear this, and I feel sorry for you. " Why did Hu Shi say "I'm sorry" for his wife? Because Jiang Dongxiu always disapproved of Hu Shi's political ideas. After more than a month, Hu Shi wrote to Dong Xiu again and talked about it. The letter said: "I have been a free man for 2 1 year (Hu Shi made a wish when he returned from studying abroad: not to talk about politics for 20 years." I have not been in politics for twenty years. At this time, neither has been realized, so how free is it to be a government official for 2 1 year? But now that the country has reached this point, the soldiers turn to me and pull me from Flara. I can't escape. So I had to be an ambassador for a year and a half. I announced that I would continue to do it until the end of the war. As soon as the war is over, I will still teach my books. " Jiang Dongxiu and Hu Shi are separated by oceans. Although I don't agree, I can't help it! Later, Hu Shi wrote to Dong Xiu and said, "Now when I come out to work, I often feel ashamed and feel sorry for you. You always advise me not to take the political road, which is what you are doing for me. If you are a woman who doesn't understand the overall situation, you must want men to be big officials. You've been with me for 20 years, and you've never thought of it that way. ..... I am ashamed of my wife, which is true. " ⑨

As a scholar, Hu Shi occasionally said something he shouldn't have said in diplomatic occasions after serving as the ambassador to the United States, which gave an excuse to some people who were dissatisfied with Hu Shi in China and set off an anti-Hu agitation. The wind reached the ears of Jiang Dongxiu who took refuge in Shanghai. She doesn't want Hu Shi to be an official in the government. After hearing this kind of wind, I feel that it is not worthwhile to get involved in politics. This brave woman asked Zhang Weici, Hu Shi's good friend, to come forward and ask him to persuade Hu Shi to resign due to illness, while sending a telegram asking the government to allow Hu Shi to resign.

Western proverb cloud; The wife is a man's "other half", and Hu Shi's "other half" is a loyal "husband and wife", living for him and serving him; Make him rampage and carefree in his academic career. During his ten years in New York, Jiang Dongxiu was busy in that shabby apartment all day. She doesn't know English, and sometimes she has to go shopping by herself. It's hard enough. Once Hu Shi was not at home, Jiang Dongxiu was alone at home, and a big man broke through the window. Jiang Dongxiu subconsciously opened the door of the apartment and shouted "Go" to the thief who stole the helmet! The thief took a look at her and really "G0". Jiang Dongxiu can't speak English. He can only say "Go". Jiang Dongxiu can also cook delicious Hui cuisine, especially Hui cuisine pots and bean curd dregs. She often invites her fellow villagers in America to her house for a tofu feast.

Besides serving Hu Shi's life, Jiang Dongxiu often amused himself by playing cards. She always wins at cards, and somehow. The money she won at the mahjong table is also one of Hu's regular income. Later, when Hu Shi was the dean of research in Taiwan Province Province, Mrs. Hu often invited friends to play cards at home, and Hu Shi never intervened. Sometimes, when there are four vacancies, she even asks Hu Shi to be a corner. As the dean, Hu Shi, in order to keep the good tradition that the former dean (Cai Yuanpei) forbade playing spleen in public houses, said to his secretary, please help me buy a house to live in, because it is too big and there are many friends who play mahjong, so it is not convenient to play cards in public houses. It seems that Hu Shi is too considerate.

Besides playing cards, Jiang Dongxiu usually reads martial arts novels. When living in New York, she stayed at the stage of reading martial arts novels. Tang Degang said, "Mrs. Hu can't find a partner. She is studying martial arts novels. Jin Yong's works, Mrs. Hu is a few treasures, and Jin Yong's novels are placed on the bookshelf of the Hu family, and they are also embarrassed with Dai Dongyuan and Cui Bi! " ⑩

1On the evening of February 24th, 962, Hu Shi suffered a heart attack and died in Cai Yuanpei Hall, Central Research Institute of Nangang, Taipei. Jiang Dongxiu was in agony when he heard the news. The doctor gave her two large doses of sedatives, which did not restrain her grief and excitement. At noon on February 26th, her eldest son, Wang Zuwen, rushed back to Taipei from America. After paying homage to his father's body, he turned and went home to comfort his mother. Mother and son met and wept bitterly. "Does Sidur know about your father's death, too?" Wang Zu trembled and whispered, "He died before his father!" Mrs Hu was shocked and couldn't believe her ears. She asked. "What did you say?" "I heard people from the mainland say in the United States, I'm afraid you are sad. I have been afraid to write and tell you. " After hearing the bad news, Jiang Dongxiu suddenly fainted. Everyone present was frightened. After a period of rescue, she slowly woke up. Later, Wang Zu asked softly, "Father cremated his body in his will. What do you think? " Mrs. Hu said, "No. I made an appointment with your father first, and the deceased has the right to decide the burial method of the deceased first. I advocate coffin burial. " Funeral committee conveyed this opinion to Chiang Kai-shek, and Chiang Kai-shek said, "Do as Mrs. Hu says!" ⑩

According to Tang Degang, Mrs Hu also wrote an autobiography in pencil and took it to new york to show it to him. Although there are many typos in the article, it vividly describes her life experience. Unfortunately, I don't know where this autobiography is now.

On the eve of the army crossing the river, Jiang Dongxiu wanted to live in Yuexintang, his hometown in Jiangcun. Because Hu Shi insisted that she go to America, she had to leave the motherland and fly away. After living in New York for ten years, he returned to Taiwan Province Province on 1958 and died on 1975. Heng is eighty-five years old.
