Jilin: The Legend of Longtan

Longtan District is the jurisdiction of Jilin City. It is in the north of the city, with Longtan Mountain in the east, Songhua River in the south and Songhua River in the west. The terrain is high in the east and low in the west, narrow in the east and west, and narrow in the north and south. Named after Longtan Mountain in this area. Jurisdiction over 12 streets, 4 towns and 4 townships.

Longtan Mountain, standing on the east bank of Songhua River, is tall and straight, with quiet scenery and lush trees, covering the whole mountain. Longtan peak is 388.3 meters above sea level. Climbing to the top of the mountain overlooks the whole city. In the Qing Dynasty, because a small river in the north of Shandong was rich in small fish, Longtan Mountain was also called Xiha (Manchu, meaning "small fish") Mountain. On Longtan Mountain, there are Longtan Mountain Park and Koguryo Ancient City. Longtan Mountain City has been listed as a provincial key cultural relics protection unit and a scenic spot in Jilin Province. Longtan Mountain is named after the legend of Longtan Mountain City and Longtan in the city.

Longtan is located at the lowest point in the northwest corner of Longtan Mountain, also known as "water dungeon". According to textual research, it was a spare water storage tank built by soldiers guarding the mountain city in the Koguryo era (the other was the Liao and Jin dynasties) using mountain springs. The pool is 52.8 meters long from east to west, 25.75 meters wide from north to south and 9.08 meters deep. The water depth is blue, and the walls are made of neat rectangular granite. No matter whether the weather is dry or flood, the water level has not changed much, and it has never dried up after countless cold and heat. There is a Tan Fang in front of Longtan, and there was once a plaque of "Louze QIA", which was the imperial book of Qing Emperor Jing Zong 189 1 (the 17th year of Guangxu reign in Qing Dynasty). The pool is ethereal, surrounded by quiet green trees, and it has the reputation of "Longtan printing the moon", which is one of the eight scenic spots in Jilin.

There is also a touching fairy tale about the origin of Longtan. Legend has it that a long time ago, the weather in Longtan Mountain was fine and the grain was abundant. People fish, hunt and farm and live a peaceful and contented life. One day, suddenly it was dark, lightning and thunder, and a dragon fell from the sky and fell into the mountain pond. Since then, people have called this pool Longtan, and this mountain is also called Longtan Mountain. This dragon often asks for rain, and floods drown people at the foot of the mountain. One year, the dragon flooded again, flooding crops and houses at the foot of the mountain, and the people fled everywhere. A girl named Lin Xiaomei was also washed away by the flood. Her father, Lin Weng, chased after her and finally swam to her daughter. Just as she was about to save her daughter, an injured swallow suddenly landed in front of Lin Weng. Weng Lin saved the swallow first, and then looked at her daughter but disappeared. Lin Weng and his wife lost their only daughter, and they were in great pain. At this moment, the rescued swallow suddenly spoke. She comforted the old couple and admitted that Mr. and Mrs. Lin Weng were their parents. Because the swallow lives in Longtan, everyone affectionately calls her Longtan Swallow. In order to drive away the dragon and repay the couple for saving their lives, Longtanyan decided to fly to Xianshan in the South China Sea to learn from the teacher. Three years later, the Longtan Swallow successfully returned and led the Swallow to defeat the dragon. Since then, people at the foot of Longtan Mountain have lived a quiet life again.

It is said that the surrendered dragon was chained to the bottom of the pool. In the early years, an iron chain was tied to the trunk of the pool, and the other end was deeply hung at the bottom of the pool. A nosy man zipped up his zipper, and suddenly dark clouds were gathering, the wind was blowing hard and the pool was churning. According to legend, there is a birch tree in the southeast of the pool, which is 9 feet high and 2 feet in diameter at breast height, with straight branches and lush foliage. 1754 (19th year of Qing Qianlong), Emperor Qianlong visited here and named this birch as "Holy Tree", which was sacrificed with Longtan every spring and autumn. After liberation, the relevant departments have dredged and cleaned Longtan, and items such as iron chains and Jin dynasty pottery have been unearthed at the bottom of the pool.
