Mongols and Khitans are completely different concepts. Calling Mongolians Khitans is a habitual collective name for Mongolians who occupied the former Daliao and the later Xiliao (both under the Khitan regime) after the rise of Mengyuan in the 13th century, which should be said to be wrong. There is no racial inheritance between the two.

Of course, from the historical origin, both Mongolians and Qidan people came from the Donghu tribe who lived in the northeast during the pre-Qin period. Donghu is a tribal alliance, including tribes of the same nationality but different names at that time. Donghu people include many tribes and nationalities such as Donghu, Wuhuan and Xianbei, as well as Murong, Yuwen, Duanbu, Tuoba, Beggars, Bald and Tuguhun, as well as Rouran, Kumoxi, Qidan, Shiwei and Mongolia.

Mongolians originated from the Mongolian Plateau in eastern Mongolia and have always been nomadic. The Khitans originated in the forests of Siberia and belonged to Tunguska people. Their ancestors mainly fished and hunted, and then migrated westward to grassland areas.

Their language belongs to Altaic language family, but belongs to different branches. Mongolian belongs to Mongolian branch, and Qidan belongs to Tungusic language family, which is an ancient national language in northeast China.

The original meaning of "Khitan" is wrought iron, indicating firmness. However, since the end of Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of Ming Dynasty, the Qidan nationality has disappeared from the historical records. Some experts from China Academy of Medical Sciences and China Academy of Social Sciences have made use of DNA technology to analyze and come to the conclusion that the Daur people living in the northeast have the closest genetic relationship with the Khitans, and they are descendants of the Khitans. The "I" of A, Mang and Jiang in Yunnan has similar paternal lineage to the Daur nationality and is also a descendant of the Khitan nationality.
