What does Zhu Yuanzhang look like?

It is said that history is an ugly emperor.

At present, there are five or six portraits reflecting Zhu Yuanzhang's appearance, but Zhu Yuanzhang's appearance on these portraits is not the same.

In the Ming Tombs of Nanjing, Zhu Yuanzhang sat in an easy chair, covered with a soft square towel. The face is particularly long, the forehead is raised, the face is covered with large and small soil spots, the beard is sparse, the eyes are bright, the eyebrows are thick and thick, the eyebrows are hung up, the nose is big, the nostrils are upturned, and the ears are very long, almost hanging to the shoulders. His mouth is big and wide, and his chin protrudes much more than his forehead. Its appearance makes people feel dignified and fierce. Above this portrait, there are four characters "portrait of Mao". It is generally believed that this is the truth of Zhu Yuanzhang.

There is also a portrait of Zhu Yuanzhang in the Palace Museum in Beijing. The outline of this portrait of Zhu Yuanzhang is similar to that of the Ming Tombs, but it is obviously artistically treated, and its appearance is much kinder, giving people a sense of elegance.

There is also a portrait of the emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. They were all painted according to the requirements of the emperor. Zhu Yuanzhang in the painting is sitting in a dangerous position, with a long robe and jade belt, a plump face and a kind expression, which is far from his appearance.

These different portrait departments have different origins. At first, Zhu Yuanzhang ordered Sun Wenzong, a famous portrait painter at that time, to go to Beijing to paint his portrait. Sun Wenzong painted meticulously and vividly. Sun Wenzong thought the emperor would be happy to see it, but Zhu was not satisfied. After a while, Zhu Yuanzhang called another portrait painter, Shen Xiyuan, to paint his portrait. Shen Xiyuan painted more vividly than Sun Wenzong, but Zhu Yuanzhang was still not satisfied after reading it. Later, a portrait painter named Chen Yuan realized the mystery. When he painted Zhu Yuanzhang's portrait, he only drew the outline of his face almost the same, and the rest were painted in imperial mode, so he looked kind, cordial and elegant. Zhu Yuanzhang was very satisfied after seeing this portrait, and asked Chen Yuan to draw more and give them to the kings. For this reason, Chen Yuan also got Wen's official position.
