Kaohsiung was developed very early, and it is called the oldest place in Taiwan Province with Tainan, Beigang, Chiayi and Madou. It is the earliest residence of Pingpu aborigines (Marca Island). Because of the abundance of bamboo, it was named "takau" (Pingpu language, meaning bamboo forest), which was transliterated as "beating dogs" in Chinese, and "beating dogs" was the earliest name in Kaohsiung.

1624, the Dutch landed in Taiwan Province province, established the city of relanjie in Anping, Tainan, and defeated the local aborigines around 1635. 1662, Zheng successfully defeated the Dutch garrison in Taiwan Province province, and the local name was changed to Wannian country in 1664, and it was ruled by Zheng Jing.

In the early Qing Dynasty, Fengshan County was built in xinglong village (now Zuo Ying), where Fengshan County is located. With the gradual development of fishery, scattered small settlements have gradually appeared in offshore areas. This port was first opened around 1680, and it was also a trading port opened to the outside world in the late Qing Dynasty. Despite the presence of some foreign businessmen, the scale of the port still cannot be expanded.

In the early days of Japanese occupation, the Japanese thought the name "beating a dog" was indecent, and changed it to "Kaohsiung" (because the Japanese pronunciation of "Kaohsiung" is "taka-o", which is close to the sound of "beating a dog"). The Japanese began to build Kaohsiung into a small-scale port city in a planned way, especially since 1908, and vigorously built Kaohsiung Port into a modern port to prepare for the expansion of colonial forces to Southeast Asia; In addition, since 1900, Kaohsiung is the terminal of the longitudinal railway. Hamaxing and Yancheng Pu (now Yancheng Pu) near the port became the fastest growing areas at that time. Later, with the eastward movement of the new Kaohsiung Post (Kaohsiung Station), the urban area gradually expanded eastward to Dagangpu. During the period of 1940s, due to the need of the southward policy, the Japanese began to use Kaohsiung as an industrial development base. However, at the end of World War II, Kaohsiung Port was seriously damaged by intensive air strikes by American planes.

develop

After the war, with the gradual recovery of the normal operation of Kaohsiung Port, 1966 set up a processing and export zone in Nanzi, and 1970 set up a large shipyard, steel plant and petrochemical plant, and the image of Kaohsiung as an industrial center was gradually established. The freight volume of Kaohsiung Port has also increased year by year and started to expand. The development area of the city is also centered on Kaohsiung Station and continues to expand in three directions: south, east and north.

The scenery in Kaohsiung is dominated by "Eight Views of Kaohsiung", including: the sunset glow on Qishan, the heron in Chengpu, the night rain on Ape Peak, the autumn moon guarding the building, the sails returning from Jianggang, the drum sound in the bay, the breeze in Linghu and the fishing songs in Jiangcun. Xiziwan Scenic Area (where National Sun Yat-sen University was founded), which has the reputation of "West Lake in Taiwan Province Province", has many unique tourist attractions and is the most famous tourist area in South Taiwan Province Province. The main scenic spots are scattered along the highway around the lake, and the whole area is beautiful, suitable for enjoying the lake, enjoying the water and boating. There are many tourist attractions around Lianchi in Zuo Ying, such as Confucius Temple, Dragon and Tiger Pagoda, Spring and Autumn Pavilion and so on. In Shoushan Park, you can enjoy the beautiful sea view and watch the lovely macaques on foot. It is also an excellent place for leisure. In addition, the largest Buddhist temples in Taiwan Province Province-Foguang Mountain, the lighthouse behind the flag, the fort behind the flag, the British consulate in the former Qing Dynasty, the north gate of Xiongzhen, etc. are all historical relics and are worth visiting.

Kaohsiung City is located between Jianan Plain and Pingtung Plain, facing the south entrance of Taiwan Province Strait. This is a beautiful port city, with long summers and no winter all year round.

Besides Kaohsiung Harbor, Shoushan Scenic Area and Lianchitan Scenic Area are the most famous tourist attractions in Kaohsiung City. Shoushan, formerly known as Dagou Mountain, also known as Qilin Mountain, buried Jinshan and Gao Xiongshan. 1923, when the Japanese emperor visited here, he changed it to Shoushan, and now it is changed to Gao Xiongshan, which is located in Kaohsiung Port and confronts Qihoushan. At an altitude of1137m, the whole mountain is uplifted and composed of coral, with Shoufeng at the top triangle and broken ridges and steep cliffs on three sides. The ancient north gate of Chengmenxiong Town in Shoushan Scenic Area was built in the 30th year of Qing Emperor Kangxi. It is the gateway to the birthplace of Kaohsiung City, where there is a British consulate. This European-style building has been in ruins for more than 100 years. Xiziwan Beach is located at the foot of Shoushan Mountain, with beautiful scenery, wide bathing beach, flat beach, soft white sand, blue sea water and small waves. The tall and straight coconut groves make Xizi Bay full of tropical scenery. It is not only a good bathing beach, but also a summer resort. Shoushan Park has lush trees and beautiful springs. Acacia and Indus cover Shoushan Temple, Faxing Temple, Zaojue Garden, Martyrs Temple and Qianguang Temple. Zhonglie Temple is an ancient building with the traditional style of China, with a deep courtyard and lush vegetation. Yuan Ting Temple has a history of more than 200 years and is one of the most famous ancient temples in Taiwan Province Province. Longquan Temple, built in the 9th year of Qing Qianlong, is magnificent and one of the Buddhist holy places in Taiwan. When you climb the Cishou Tower, you can overlook it. To the west, there is a vast strait connecting water and sky. Overlooking the high-rise buildings in the urban area, the streets are vertical and horizontal, with a panoramic view; There are many ships inside and outside the port area; In the north, Banping Mountain rises from the ground and forms another famous scenic spot in Kaohsiung with the sparkling Lianchi Lake. Banpingshan and Lianchi have touching legends, and the scenery here is picturesque and fascinating. The picture composed of Chunqiu Pavilion, Banping Mountain and weeping willows has always been regarded as the representative of Kaohsiung scenery. In the past, the lotus pond was reflected on the beautiful semi-flat mountain, which was covered with lotus flowers and water chestnuts, shaded by willows on the shore, and lined with slender spring and autumn pavilions. It has not only the shadow of lakes and mountains, but also the charming scenery and simple pastoral beauty. But today, with the construction of temples and pavilions, the pattern of pavilions in the Spring and Autumn Period has been broken. The newly-built Qimingtang, Wu Liting, Dragon Tiger Pagoda and Confucius Temple dwarf the earliest Spring and Autumn Pavilion. There are many places of interest in Lianchitan, and the Confucius Temple, modeled after the Confucius Temple in Song Dynasty and Qufu, is magnificent, ranking first among all Confucius Temples in the province. Qimingtang is a typical palace-style building, carved with beams and painted columns, antique, dedicated to Confucius, Guan Gong, Yue Fei, Zheng Chenggong and other civil and military saints. Banping Mountain is closely connected with Lianchitan, with an altitude of 223 meters. The limestone in Banpingshan Mountain is exploited in large quantities as raw material for cement production.
