The Great Compassion Hall of the ancient temple is named after the Great Compassion Guanyin Bodhisattva. It is the largest and oldest Buddhist ten-square jungle temple in Tianjin. The temple was founded in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, flourished in the eighth year of Kangxi, and occupied an area of 56 mu in its heyday. Later, due to the vicissitudes of past dynasties, many of them were promoted and abolished, leaving only the West Courtyard, which was smaller in scale. By the year of 194 1, the master was revived, and there were buildings such as the Heavenly King Hall, the Ursa Major Hall, the Great Compassion Hall and the East-West Annex Building in the East Courtyard, covering an area of 8,000 square meters. In A.D. 1979, the municipal government allocated funds to repair the temples damaged during the "Cultural Revolution" and rebuilt the whole Buddha hall. 1982 was listed as a municipal cultural relics protection unit, and 1983 was approved by the State Council as a key temple in the Han nationality area of China. The temple is also famous for offering sacrifices to the top bones of Master Xuanzang, a monk of the Tang Dynasty, from 1945 to 1956.

Since the reform and opening up, with the further implementation of the policy of freedom of religious belief, Dabei Temple has also opened a new chapter in history. During Buddhist festivals, the temple is filled with cigarettes and crowds, receiving more than one million pilgrims and tourists every year.

At present, Dabei Temple covers a total area of 42,000 square meters (about 63 acres). When the whole expansion plan is completed according to the scale of Chuanhan Temple, Dabei Temple will stand on the banks of Haihe River in a more majestic manner to welcome ten believers and tourists at home and abroad.
