I am a forensic policeman, that is, the "forensic doctor" as the saying goes. My laboratory provides forensic expertise support for two intermediate courts and four district and county public security bureaus. To put it simply, if there is a murder case, the body will be sent to our laboratory, and we will examine it, find out the cause of death, issue a report and submit it to the court or the public security bureau.

Death is the best proof of the iron law of causality.

People who live have to die. It's hard to imagine the cause of death. However, when we issue a formal report, there is a strict format. Generally speaking, it can be divided into fundamental cause of death, direct cause of death, auxiliary cause of death, induced cause of death and common cause of death. The reason why I explain these technical terms is to say that our society has a complete logical system for death, which can completely realize the correct explanation of death.

For example, in a traffic accident, a 70-year-old man was knocked down by an electric car, and his head hit a cement road pile on the side of the road, so he died. The death examination report will say, "Blunt craniocerebral injury leads to closed skull fracture, secondary intracranial infection, multiple organ failure and immune system disorder." . Among them, craniocerebral injury is the root cause of death, intracranial infection is the direct cause of death, and immune system disorder is the auxiliary cause of death.

However, can such an explanation really answer such an important question as "Why do people die"? I have been engaged in forensic work for 26 years and have always been puzzled by this phenomenon. Because under the same injury, some people will die and some people will live. Some people died with minor injuries, while others miraculously survived with serious injuries.

Later, when I came into contact with Buddhism and had some superficial understanding of Buddhism, I was relieved of this problem. Death is a part of this world, a result of life and a link of the law of cause and effect. If we understand it from this angle, we can clearly understand the truth of death.

Therefore, in recent years, I have conducted a more in-depth investigation on the cases I have handled and made a lot of notes. More and more, I feel that death is not accidental, it is the best proof of the iron law of cause and effect. I heard some families of the deceased painfully state to me: Why did the deceased die young in middle age when he was so kind? Why can so-and-so bad people enjoy a long life after all their evil deeds? Why do people who are cautious all their lives encounter unexpected troubles? Why do those careless fools rampage on the road thousands of times and never get hurt?

I think that all resentment comes from ignorance of cause and effect.

Killing chickens for business was cut to death by his own son.

Let me start with a murder case that bothers me the most. This case directly led me to Buddhism. The case itself is not complicated, but because it took a long time, I made an in-depth investigation.

In 2002, a 28-year-old boy killed his parents in their 60s in the middle of the night. Two dead people were tied to the bed when they slept in the middle of the night, and then their throats were cut, and blood splashed on the wall. The murderer escaped that night and was later arrested in a small city in the south. The murderer is married and has a son. On the night of the incident, the wife took the child back to her family because of a divorce dispute, thus avoiding the nightmare of killing.

On the surface, this is a case with clear facts and conclusive evidence, and the procuratorate has a confession, a complete chain of evidence and even witnesses, so it should be judged strictly and quickly. Sure enough, the first instance quickly issued a sentence of immediate execution of the death penalty and deprivation of political rights for life. However, the defendant's lawyer filed an appeal on the grounds that the criminal had serious mental illness and applied for a psychiatric appraisal. The second trial dragged on for a long time, and the result was "unclear facts" and was returned to the court of first instance for retrial. The court of first instance also asked the procuratorate to supplement the investigation and enrich the evidence. This dragged on for a long time, and the final judgment was that the death penalty was suspended for two years. The defendant's lawyer appealed again and the result was rejected. The verdict became final, and the case ended like this.

This case dragged on for four years, and I testified in court seven or eight times. In the process of supplementary investigation, the whole family of the deceased was deeply investigated and a lot of information was accumulated.

Explaining the defendant's motive for murder, the indictment said that the murderer was the only son in the family, spoiled since childhood and had a very arrogant and paranoid personality. Due to the shortage of family housing, the couple have been living with the elderly since the murderer got married, and contradictions are frequent. A few days before the incident, my parents and my wife had another quarrel. The murderer asked his parents for money to buy a house. Parents said that they had no money for the time being, and blamed their son for being unemployed, incompetent and losing face in front of his neighbors, thus inspiring the murderer's evil thoughts of killing.

However, can this really fully explain the murderer's motive for killing? There are so many spoiled sons in the world and so many families have disputes. Why did this murderer have the idea of killing his biological parents? In the file, I found such an amazing confession. The murderer said this: I have long wanted to kill them, they are useless, and I can't afford to buy me a suite. Forget it when I'm dead. I've been thinking about this for months, but they are my biological parents, and I don't want them to die painfully. I wanted to give them pesticides, but I came back on my way to the drugstore because pesticides would burn their intestines. I wanted to take them to the reservoir by electric car and push them into the reservoir to drown, but it didn't happen that day. So I repeatedly thought that it would be better to cut your throat like this, without too much pain and die quickly.

When I read this sentence, my spine was cold. Because in the course of my investigation, I learned that the old couple who were killed opened a stall for slaughtering live chickens at the farmer's market, and the business was doing very well. When I went to the scene to investigate, because the owner of this booth was killed, others thought this booth was unlucky and could not be rented out. According to people nearby, the deceased tied up the live chicken and hung it upside down on a wire rope, then pinched the chicken's head and cut its throat. Chicken blood will not be wasted, but it can still be sold. The deceased has been doing this business all his life and made a lot of money. Moreover, it is said that this skill of cutting throat and killing chickens was handed down from their family.

I remember that it was this incident that made me question the logic I believed in and gave me a particularly unforgettable understanding of the law of causality. I stayed up almost all night that night. Although I'm not so sure, it's because the deceased slaughtered live chickens all his life and cut the throats of so many live chickens that he was cut by his son. But won't this coincidence make us feel thrilling? That's how I came to believe in the law of cause and effect of Buddhism.

The tragic ending of the evil mine owner

We often think that death is a bad thing, but to our surprise, "eternal life" is a worse thing, more like a more terrible punishment than death.

This is a mine accident case. The mine owner Zhao opened a small coal mine in a small town. Coal mines have no production qualifications and no safety measures, and they all rely on personal relationships with local powerful people to maintain their operations. Obviously, he has a strong umbrella behind him, because after the mine accident, the local area could not investigate smoothly and had to hand it over to us to handle the case in different places.

In fact, it was not a national security accident, but a gas explosion caused the mine to collapse, causing one death and two serious injuries. According to the hidden rules in their industry, this kind of mine disaster can generally be handled with a relatively large compensation to the workers' families. But coincidentally, it happened that the mine owner was detained after being thoroughly investigated by the unannounced visit team.

When I and other investigators went to Zhao for evidence, the staff of the detention center told me that Zhao was taken to the hospital because of diabetes. I rushed to the hospital under the Justice Bureau and met Zhao. Zhao, in his fifties, is a burly man with a loud voice and a tough personality, who doesn't cooperate at all. He sat by the bed, ignoring my question. He didn't tell me until I left. Don't worry, someone will bail me out in less than a month.

He's right. Due to various interference factors, the case went very smoothly, and soon the procedure for changing compulsory measures was changed to residential surveillance. But on the night when he cheered for his personal freedom to be restored, diabetes and gallstones broke out seriously together. Although he was not put in a detention center, his illness left him behind.

Since then, Zhao has never left the hospital. After more than four months, the case was finally decided. Zhao was sentenced to six years in prison, but he could not go to prison, because his health was getting weaker and weaker, and his sentence could only be executed in the public security hospital.

Because of work, I often go to the public security hospital to do things, and I can often see him. Because of his money, he still lives alone in a clean and tidy single room, although the windows are welded with iron railings. Every time we meet, his eyes are wide open, as if thinking about something. Once he asked me, are you religious? I told him frankly, yes, I am a Buddhist. He sighed and said nothing.

After a while, he was transferred to hospital because of his serious illness, and the prison also went through the formalities of medical treatment outside the prison. But strangely, not only the prison refused to accept him, but also the hospital refused to accept him, and neither did the terrorists. When I saw him again, he had been lying in the hospital bed for almost eight months. The tall man 1.8 meters quickly reduced his weight to 90 pounds. We often chat face to face and he trusts me more and more. Sometimes, he entrusts me with some personal affairs.

Although I study medicine, I have never seen such a thin body. The eyes are completely sunken, the cheekbones are huge, the lips are blue and the ribs are prominent, and they are clearly visible one by one. When you breathe, your ribs bulge slightly, and you feel like you can break them at the touch. The thighs are even more daunting. As thick as an arm, the skin is extremely slack, as if it is directly attached to the bone, and there is no muscle at all. Because I had abdominal surgery for gallstones, I had a small wound on my stomach, but because of diabetes, the wound could not heal, and the surrounding skin festered with repeated infections. This skeleton is enough to give people nightmares.

I checked his medical records. According to common sense, a patient like Wu Cheng has no strength to support his heartbeat because of multiple organ failure, but he lives tenaciously and painfully, that is, he will not die. Although he has repeatedly told me that the only goal now is death, death is the most comfortable thing. He is in great pain every minute now. Once he went on a hunger strike for more than ten days and suffered from severe heart failure. The doctors thought he would die, but he came back with a strange tie.

For a long time, I didn't see him again because of my busy work. But one day he asked the nurse to call me and invited me over. That night, he told me something in a weak voice. More than ten years ago, when he first started to build a small coal mine, because of lack of funds, he found someone to cheat some mentally retarded vagrants at the railway station, let them dig coal in the well, and only hired a few security guards. After he accumulated the first bucket of gold, in order to hide the truth, he closed the mine in that small coal mine and let these mentally retarded people starve and suffocate slowly in the dark. His confession was later confirmed, and the public security organs dug up more than 20 skeletons in the area.

Later, Zhao lived in the hospital for nearly half a year. In the past six months, he spent almost every minute in a highly critical situation, but in any case, he just didn't die. All his possessions were used for medical expenses, and his family never visited him again. Although he is critically ill, he can howl day and night and tear his vocal cords. Because of the serious lack of immune system, any small wound on his body can't heal, and he will be infected repeatedly and then fester. Finally, he could hardly find a good piece of skin, and his whole body was badly festered. I didn't go to see him again, but I heard from the nurses around me that after his death, when the body was wrapped in sheets and transported, the bones were so brittle that there were many fractures on the spot, and the skin festered and suppurated. Before his body was put into the freezer, it almost turned into a pool of meat.

The tongue of the troublemaker was frozen off.

There is also a very bizarre case, which happened last winter.

I got a job in the middle of the night and am going to the scene. There is a big bridge in the suburbs and countryside. A citizen called the police and a person was hanged on the bridge. When we arrived at the scene, we found that a woman committed suicide. After the trial, I think she is determined to commit suicide. She jumped down without hesitation, so strong that her neck was broken.

We found out the identity of this woman, who comes from a nearby village. As a result, there is a more amazing scene waiting for us. In this woman's home, the body of a child less than one year old is lying on the bed. When the police arrived, the father of the child didn't know the news of his wife's suicide and was crying to tell the police what had happened.

As it turns out, things are not complicated. My husband went out to drink at a friend's house, and my wife took care of the children at home alone. When her husband came back, his wife had a big fight with him, saying that he was having an affair outside and dating a woman. In a rage, the husband left home to find a friend to drink. The woman was also very angry, so she sent a text message to her husband saying that you were coming back to see the children. I won't look after the children anymore. But the man was too drunk to notice the message at all. When he got home, he found that the child had frozen to death because he kicked off the quilt. Because the houses in the local countryside have no heating at all.

The poor man didn't know that his wife hanged herself, and he told the police angrily that it was his wife's mistake that caused the child to freeze to death. When the police told him that your wife hanged herself, he passed out without saying a word.

Two lives were lost because of trifles, and a happy family was broken. We just sigh. After careful investigation, we confirmed that it was suicide, no doubt. This case will be closed soon.

However, in our investigation, we found that Liu, who actually lives near the national highway in Cuntou and repairs motorcycles, is the initiator of this tragedy. After the visit, I learned that Liu was in his fifties, divorced for many years and lived alone. He likes to gossip and stir up relations for no reason. It was he who told this woman that your husband was having an affair. He described it vividly. When we investigated these so-called romance legends, we found that they were all hearsay.

Many villagers reported that Liu likes to do such things to sow discord. Many families are not harmonious because of his nonsense behind his back. Husband and wife turn against each other, and father and son become enemies and even fight. Whenever Liu heard that his provocation was successful, he was so excited that he was still proud on the wine table.

But after all, this does not constitute libel, nor does it constitute any other charges. Although women committed suicide because of false belief in rumors, it does not mean that Liu is the murderer. Therefore, for Liu, the police can only reprimand and give up.

Strangely, after less than a few months, the local film police told me that something had happened to Liu. One night, Liu was drunk at a friend's house. After returning to the repair shop, he got up in the middle of the night to drink, touched a bottle and took a sip in a daze. Unexpectedly, this is not beer, but liquid helium. This solvent is used for motorcycle sheet metal painting, and the temperature is extremely low. After spraying, everything can be frozen in just two seconds.

Liu fainted on the spot, but fortunately someone was next to him and was sent to the hospital in time. The doctor found that his tongue was like a hard ice sculpture and fell off at the touch. The doctor said that he not only lost his tongue, but also the whole mouth was difficult to preserve. In the future, he may have to live on a stomach tube for the rest of his life.

I'm afraid of cause and effect, not evil death.

For doctors, death is actually the inevitable result of illness or injury. Medically speaking, any death is caused by disease or injury. Even those very old people who died quietly in their sleep must have diseases to explain. Therefore, medical knowledge about life and cause and effect has become very mechanical, simple and even rude. If you have a fever, lower your temperature. If you have stomach cancer, remove a part of the broken stomach. If your blood pressure is too high, dilate your blood vessels. If your heartbeat is weak, use a pacemaker. If your mouth can't breathe, put a tube in your trachea. ...

So I often reflect on myself. Although this explanation sounds reasonable and intuitive, can it really explain the cause and effect of life?

I am a Buddhist disciple, at the same time, I am also a very dedicated doctor. I am in awe of science and faith. However, we have to say that the limitations of science really cruelly limit our horizons. A person is doomed to die. The time, manner and pain of his death are really related to his behavior.

I believe that if I didn't do more research on the background of the deceased in my spare time because I believed in Buddhism, I would simply attribute the terrible death to injury, disease and violent crime. After a lot of investigation and in-depth analysis, I found that "good is rewarded with good, evil with evil" is true. For example, if we can see the stars twinkling, it must be because a planet hundreds of millions of kilometers away is shining-but it may take hundreds of years for this light to reach our eyes. The distance between cause and effect may be short or long, but the strong connection between cause and effect is absolutely undeniable.

However, this law of causality is sometimes very obvious and can be seen at a glance, but many times it is very hidden and tortuous. Unless you have deep insight, it is difficult to see the mystery inside. However, if we have firm confidence in Buddhism, we can know that the so-called good death must be a result, and this result must be due to some major reason. As the saying goes, "As you sow, you reap".

Summarizing my death notes recorded over the years, I can only say with emotion that the so-called "incredible karma of all beings" in Buddhism is indeed the supreme truth, which is beyond doubt. Only by using this truth to explain the life and death problems in our daily life can we get a satisfactory answer. Other explanations are superficial. In particular, it seems reasonable to explain the death phenomenon with medicine, but it is actually the opposite.
