History of Chunxi Road in Chengdu

Chunxi Road was named after 1924, 87 years ago, and it was called Centennial Golden Street. At that time, Yang Sen, the governor of Sichuan Province, proposed construction. Yang Sen ordered all the old yamen to be demolished, and a north-south street was built here. Later, two more streets were built, namely the east, west, south and north sections of Chunxi Road. According to relevant historical records, Chunxi Road's previous life began with merchants, originated from the government and was completed in the warlord period.

More than a hundred years ago, it was once the yamen of the Qing Dynasty. The yamen faces south and covers an extremely wide area. There is a deep roadway in front of the door, with Nanxin Street on the right, Chengshou Street and Hakka Lane on the left, and Zouma Street opposite. After the Republic of China, the yamen was abandoned, leaving many shacks and small shops in this deep alley in front of Zouma Street. A middle school was established on the site of the old yamen.

The former officialdom instantly turned into a market, and the small commodity market was formed in the cries of small vendors, the flags of shops, the bargaining of buying and selling, and the noisy voices.

1in the spring of 924, Yang Sen, a warlord who became the governor of Sichuan, entered Chengdu. At the beginning of taking office, he demolished the houses around the former provincial judge's office, imitated western Europe, improved the municipal administration and built roads. In this way, a new road divided into east, west, south and north sections was built, and a street garden was specially opened at the crossroads.

After the completion of the new road, Yang Sendun asked Jiang, a former Qing Dynasty juror in Shuangliu County, to name it. Knowing that Yang Sen was overjoyed, Jiang named this new road "Wei Sen Road". This street name seems a little exotic, but it actually contains a moral and is intended to be famous. At that time, the Beiyang government awarded Yang Sen the title of "Wei Sen".

Yang Sen was expelled from Chengdu in the battle of "unifying Sichuan", and "Wei Sen Road" was changed to "Chunxi Road". Why did you change your name? Why Chunxi Road? Of course, the name change is to remove the traces of Yang Sen and a Chunxi Road, but there are several sayings. After Yang Sen's defeat, Jiang suggested changing "Wei Sen Road" to "Chunxi Road".

Mr. Chen, a famous calligrapher and poet, once served as the secretary of the mayor of Chengdu, Wang Zuxu, and named this road with the meaning of "warmth, people come and go", so the street was named "Chunxi Road".

There is a monument in the street garden of Chunxi Road, on which stands a bronze statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. 1928 was first completed. 1943, when she Zhongying was the mayor of Chengdu, she thought that the bronze statue was a little distorted, and specially asked the famous sculptor Liu Kaiqu to rebuild it. Today, Sun Yat-sen in the garden is a masterpiece of Liu Kaiqu.

After the Cultural Revolution began, Chunxi Road was changed to "Anti-imperialist Road" on August 24th. 1966. Because of its special position in Chengdu, it became the main gathering place of Chengdu Red Guards, and finally changed back to "Chunxi Road".
