Heather and Lagerstroemia speciosa

There are many landscape trees that can be planted in winter in rural areas, but the survival rate depends on the later management. Of course, in order to achieve high survival rate, it is also one of the key factors to choose easy-to-survive tree species. As a landscaping practitioner with many years' experience, I recommend several tree species that are easy to manage and have high survival rate in rural areas.

Considering that I have worked and lived in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai in South China and Central China, I will introduce several evergreen trees, which are easy to survive in these two places, hoping to help everyone.

1. Osmanthus fragrans: Friends who have done landscaping know that Osmanthus fragrans, as one of the common tree species in the south, has a high survival rate. Osmanthus fragrans is planted in many large nursery bases and vast rural open spaces. Osmanthus fragrans generally includes Jingui, Yin Gui, Dangui and laurel. Among them, the fragrance of osmanthus fragrans is relatively light, and the fragrance of osmanthus fragrans is relatively strong. The fragrance of Yin Gui is lighter than that of Jingui. The color changes greatly. The fragrance of laurel is average, but the flowering period is relatively long (somewhat similar to the four seasons laurel).

Osmanthus fragrans likes warm and humid environment, with strong resistance to stress, high temperature and cold resistance. The requirements for soil are not high, except for alkaline or clay and poor drainage, which can be planted basically. If it is illuminated, it will take 6-8 hours a day. But it must be ventilated and transparent, and no water can accumulate. If the temperature is very low in winter, keep warm properly. Water and fertilizer can generally be fertilized normally. Osmanthus fragrans is relatively resistant to pruning, which is beneficial to its growth and development. Generally speaking, osmanthus fragrans has a relatively high survival rate compared with other tree species.

2. Photinia rubra: Photinia rubra, as a small evergreen hybrid tree species of Rosaceae and Photinia, has good overall stress resistance. The leaves are thick and bright, just like osmanthus. I prefer warm and humid environment, with strong drought resistance and shade resistance. It can also be planted in saline-alkali land in the north, and can be planted in both northern and southern regions. The requirements for soil are not very strict, because it is barren-resistant, and it is relatively easy to transplant into plants, because it grows faster, is resistant to pruning, grows better in slightly acidic sandy soil, and is resistant to low temperature. Therefore, planting in rural areas, normal water and fertilizer management, attention to drainage at ordinary times, timely pruning, and prevention and control of longicorn pests and diseases. The survival rate is still very high.

Third, Cinnamomum camphora: Cinnamomum camphora, one or two trees may be planted in front of the house in rural areas. Mainly to prevent mosquito bites. As a landscape street tree, it can be seen in high-speed greening, residential courtyards and parks. The survival rate of Cinnamomum camphora is still ok. In addition, camphor trees have fewer pests and diseases in the growing season and are easy to manage. Like osmanthus fragrans, it likes warm and humid environment, but it is not cold-resistant. If the temperature is low in winter, measures should be taken to prevent cold and keep warm. Cinnamomum camphora has low requirements for soil, but it is afraid of water accumulation, so drainage measures should be taken. Its root system is developed, and once rooted in the soil, it has strong lodging resistance. Normal water and fertilizer are usually enough. Compared with other tree species, the survival rate is quite high.

Summary: There are many landscape trees that are easy to survive in rural areas, such as magnolia, crape myrtle, begonia, pine and cypress, Sophora japonica, Luan tree and Zelkova schneideriana. But we only need to grasp these points when choosing, that is, low requirements for soil, good stress resistance, drought or cold tolerance, less pests and diseases, and pruning resistance. If you choose on these bases, the survival rate will naturally be guaranteed.
