How to stimulate plants to take root

Many plants are difficult to take root by cutting, such as pine, ginkgo, hawthorn, apple and cypress. Without treatment, the seedlings cannot survive or the survival rate is very low. According to research, there are several ways to promote plant rooting.

ABT rooting powder was successfully developed by Academician Wang Tao of China Academy of Forestry in the early 1980s. It is composed of various root promoters, and has the functions of promoting cuttings to take root, seed germination, and healing damaged roots.

Before cutting in spring, tie the cuttings into bundles, soak them in clear water for 3 days and nights, then drain the water and cover them with grass curtains to make the cuttings take root under ventilated conditions. Soaking Populus alba and Populus alba cuttings in water for 5 ~ 10 days is beneficial to rooting and drought resistance, and has a good effect on removing rooting inhibitors.

In cuttage seedling, the growth hormones with remarkable rooting promoting effect are naphthylacetic acid, indoleacetic acid and indolebutyric acid. The treatment method is to soak the lower end of cuttings with solution, or wet the lower end of cuttings with powder, and then cut immediately.

Treating cuttings with chemicals such as sucrose, potassium permanganate, manganese dioxide, phosphoric acid, boric acid and wax acid has a good effect on rooting. Sucrose solution can supplement the nutrition of cuttings. The rooting rate of Populus tomentosa cuttings treated with 0.5% ~ 5% concentration can reach 95% ~ 100%.

Coating a layer of thin film wax on more than one third of the cuttings including the upper interface of the cuttings. Suitable for deciduous broad-leaved tree species that are difficult to take root, such as Populus tomentosa, Platanus acerifolia, Prunus mume, Lagerstroemia indica, etc.

Incision can enlarge the wound area of cuttings, expand the range of callus and root cuttings.

For sprouted branches or branches near the ground, use the method of cultivating soil to make them yellow; For the branches at the upper part of the crown, black cloth or black paper can be put on the top of the branches before the terminal buds open, so that the sprouted new buds can be closely shaded during the whole development process, which promotes the change of internal substances and is easier to take root when cutting in autumn that year.
