How to collect and preserve scions?

After the walnut leaves fall, branches and scions can be collected until the buds germinate. The specific time of scion picking is different because of different climatic conditions in different places. The branches of northern walnut are seriously broken, and the branches are vulnerable to freezing injury in winter or early spring, so scions should be collected in late autumn and early winter. At this time, as long as the preservation conditions are good and the branches are prevented from losing water or freezing, the survival of grafting can be guaranteed. When picking, cut the branches with your hands or high branches, not with a sickle. Cut your mouth flat, don't cut it into a diagonal stubble. After harvesting, cuttings are graded according to their length and thickness, tied every 30-50 cuttings, with aligned bases, cut into excessively long, bent and immature tops, sealed with wax if possible, and finally marked with labels.

Scions used for bud grafting can be harvested in summer or stored for a short time, but the longer the storage time, the lower the survival rate. Generally, it should not be stored for more than 5 days. Scions are used for bud grafting. If there are multiple layers, add wet sand or wet soil with a thickness of 10 cm in the middle of each layer, and cover the scion with wet sand or wet soil with a thickness of about 20 cm. After the soil is frozen, Gaza will be 40 cm thick. When soil moisture increases, scions should be moved to places with low humidity such as cold storage.
