History of Shousui:
Shounian was first recorded in the Western Jin Dynasty, when people lit candles or oil lamps to keep vigil all night. In ancient times, observing the age has two meanings: the old man's observing the age means "resigning from the old", which means cherishing time; Young people keep their age in order to prolong the life of their parents. In Japan, Viet Nam, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries, influenced by China, there is a saying of keeping watch on New Year's Eve.
According to ancient books, as early as the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, there was a custom of staying up late for the New Year to ward off evil spirits. Shousui was formed in the Tang Dynasty. Emperor Taizong's poem "Shousui" contains a sentence: "Han ci dong Xue, warm in"; Meng Haoran has a poem "I am pregnant at night", "Every family doesn't lie down, and it takes a dream to miss you"; Bai Juyi has "old wine, homesick tears full of towels."
