March 28th, 2007 Superconducting Energy Storage System

Superconducting Energy Storage System (SMES) is a kind of power facility that uses superconducting coils to directly store electromagnetic energy, and then feeds it back to the power grid or other loads when necessary. It has the advantages of fast response and high conversion efficiency. It can not only reduce or even eliminate the low-frequency power oscillation of power grid, but also adjust reactive power and active power, which plays a great role in improving the power supply quality and dynamic stability of power grid. At present, small and medium-sized enterprises have been commercialized. It is predicted that by 20 10, the global demand for superconducting energy storage devices will be around1500 million US dollars.

The Institute of Electrical Engineering of Chinese Academy of Sciences put forward the principle of superconducting current limiter-energy storage system for the first time in the world, which organically combined superconducting energy storage with current limiter and opened up a new way for the application of small superconducting energy storage system. At present, the research and development of 2.5MJ/ 1MW superconducting energy storage system is under way.
