The origin of Buddha statue

There are three images of Maitreya Mahayana in Mahayana Buddhism in China.

The first image appeared in the Sixteen Kingdoms period, and it was the image of Maitreya Buddha. According to Maitreya's Ascension Sutra, vividly speaking, he is an ordinary man, remembered by the Buddha, who became a bodhisattva to ascend to ten places and become an equal consciousness, preaching Buddhism and saving all beings.

The second image appeared in the Northern Wei Dynasty and evolved into a meditation or reclining Buddha image. According to Maitreya's Life Sutra, figuratively speaking, he will lead the world out of his pocket, succeed Sakyamuni's enlightenment, and become a future Buddha from a bodhisattva. This is the standard Buddha image.

The third image began to appear in the Five Dynasties, and the image of a pot-bellied monk based on this monk began to appear in Jiangsu and Zhejiang during the Houliang period of the Five Dynasties.
