What's the difference between friction pile and column pile?

Friction pile: If the pile passes through and is supported in the compressible soil layer, the pile mainly depends on the friction of the side soil to bear the vertical load, which is called friction pile.

Column pile: When the pile passes through the soft soil layer and the pile bottom is supported on the incompressible soil layer such as rock stratum or extremely hard soil layer, the vertical load is basically borne by the soil layer at the bottom of the pile, which is called column pile or supporting pile. Some textbooks are called end-bearing piles.
