What's the difference between Gege and the princess of Qing Dynasty?

Every time I watch the Qing Palace drama, I can find a problem. There are always two names, Gege and Princess. For example, we see that some princes' daughters are also called Gege, some royal daughters are called Gege and Princess, and some are called Princess Heshuo or Princess Gulen. What's the difference between the two? Which level is higher?

In fact, the early Gege was just a title for a lady of a Manchu family. It was only after the Qing Dynasty entered the Central Plains that it began to have some special meaning. Only some nobles are called Gege. Another kind of people will also be called Gege, that is, concubines without titles of princes and nobles. For example, Niu Kelu, the biological mother of Qianlong, used to be the mansion of Yongzheng when he proclaimed himself emperor. Of course, it can also be seen from these that Gege is actually just a title of Manchu, and there is no formal title.

According to the system of Qing dynasty, they have their own system. Generally, the first daughter of a queen is called Princess Gulen, and the daughter of a concubine is called Princess Heshuo. The first daughter of the same Manchu monarch is called a princess, but most concubines have no names. Of course, these will only have corresponding grades after being canonized. If it is not canonized, it can only be called Gege, even if it is born by the Queen.

Generally speaking, Gege should only be a title, and there is no special rank and treatment, but the princess is different. With a special title, just like an official with a rank, the natural princess has a higher rank than Gege, especially before obtaining the title, all royal women can only be called Gege, and Tonggege not only represents the daughter of the royal family, but also may be the concubine of the king.
