1949 set up Yuncheng special zone to govern Yuncheng town. It governs Xinjiang Anyi, Wanquan (in Jiedian), Hejin, Jishan, Wenxi, Jiangxian, Yuanqu, Xiaxian, Pinglu (in Shengren River), Jiexian, Ruicheng, Yuxiang, Yongji (in Zhaoyi Town), Linjin, Yi Shi, Ronghe and other 17 counties.

1954, Wanquan and Ronghe counties merged and changed to Wanrong County (in the former Wanquan County Jiedian); Xie Xian County and Yuxiang County merged and changed to Jieyu County (in the former Xie Xian County); Linjin and Yi counties merged and changed to Linyi county (in the original Yi county). After Yuncheng area was abolished, it was merged into Jinnan area.

Yuncheng district was established in 1970, and the district is located in Yuncheng county.
