What does zero-day vulnerability mean?

Zero-day vulnerability, also known as zero-time difference attack, refers to a security vulnerability that is exploited maliciously immediately after being discovered. In layman's terms, it is on the same day that security patches and defects are exposed that related malicious programs appear. This kind of attack is often very destructive in expect the unexpected. Although there are not many zero-day attacks, its threat is growing.

In the past, security vulnerabilities usually took months to be exploited. Recently, the time interval between discovery and utilization has been reduced to a few days. Attacks that exploit vulnerabilities are designed to spread quickly and infect more and more systems. Attacks have evolved from passive and slow-spreading files and macro viruses to more active and self-propagating threats, which can spread within days or hours.

1. Direct prevention: Good preventive safety practices are essential. These practices include carefully installing and observing firewall policies that meet business and application requirements, upgrading antivirus software at any time, and blocking potentially harmful file attachments.

2. Real-time protection: Deploy an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) that provides comprehensive protection. When considering IPS, look for the following functions: network-level protection, application integrity check, application protocol request for comments (RFC) confirmation, content confirmation and forensic ability.

3. Prevent transmission: This can be achieved by limiting the connection to the machines necessary to meet the needs of the enterprise. Doing so can reduce the spread of attacks that exploit vulnerabilities after the first infection.
