Archaeologists agree that Nabutapraya is the oldest Stonehenge in the world and possibly the oldest observatory on the earth. It was built by a nomadic people who worshipped livestock to commemorate the arrival of the summer solstice and monsoon. McKim Malville, an emeritus professor at the University of Colorado and an expert in archaeoastronomy, said that this could be said to be the beginning of mankind's attempt to establish some connection with outer space, so what were the builders thinking at that time? Nabutapraya was discovered in the 1960s, when Egypt was planning to build a large dam project along the Nile, which would inundate the surrounding important ancient archaeological sites. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) stepped in to provide financial assistance for the relocation of these buildings. At this time, Fred Wende, a famous American archaeologist, saw another opportunity. He wanted to find the ancient origin of Egyptian pharaohs far from the Nile.

Fortunately, in 1973, when Wendorf passed about 60 miles from the Nile, he found evidence of the remains of megaliths. At first, Wendorf thought they were naturally formed, but during the subsequent excavation, Wendorf and a group of scientists, including the Polish archaeologist Romualschild, noticed that a circle of stones seemed to align with the positions of the stars, and they were arranged in some mysterious way. Scientists have found that Stonehenge in Nabutapraya once echoed the positions of arcturus, Sirius and Alpha Centauri, which is enough to make it the oldest observatory ever discovered by human beings.
