How long can rabbits live in 75 years? 1949. How long can a rabbit with drooping ears live at most?
Turtle occupies a very important position in the history of China civilization, forming a long-standing "turtle culture". There are records of turtles in many ancient books and history books. For example, Shan Hai Jing, one of the three wonderful books in ancient times, records a mysterious turtle, which is called "the turtle with a bird's head and a bird's tail", and "not deaf can be regarded as the bottom". In other words, wearing the bird's head, eagle's mouth and snake's tail of this turtle means "no deafness can cure cocoon", which is probably the earliest record of turtle's disease prevention and health care function. The ancients believed that turtles had spirituality. In the Book of Rites, tortoise is regarded as the four spirits alongside dragon, phoenix and unicorn, and tortoise shell is often used to predict good or bad luck and the future. In Yi Shu Ji, turtles are classified by age. "The turtle is a thousand years old, living for five thousand years is called a turtle, and living for ten thousand years is called a turtle." There is a saying that the tortoise is five thousand years old and the tortoise is ten thousand years old.
Looking at China's ancient books and traditional culture, turtles have the characteristics of longevity and spirituality, representing good luck and longevity. There is even a saying that "one turtle in a thousand years" is used to describe the longevity of turtles. Even today, the view that the tortoise is the longest-lived animal on earth is still deeply rooted in people's hearts. So the tortoise's life is really as long as it is, and it is always "chitose"? Actually, it's not like this. This is more symbolic. Today, Mr. Turtle will talk about this issue for the reference of interested friends.
1. Will the tortoise really live for a thousand or ten thousand years?
The "god turtle" and "spirit turtle" recorded in ancient books for thousands of years, tens of thousands of years or even immortality are obviously myths, which can be understood as the ancient people's beautiful yearning for health and longevity. But the data is not reliable, and it is impossible to infer the life of turtles. In reality, turtles can't live that long. So what is their longest life span?
At present, the longest-lived turtle with reliable data records is the Galapagos elephant turtle. This is a large turtle in the world, and its original population is only distributed in the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador. Because of its legs and feet, huge body shape, like an elephant, it was named like a turtle. Their life span is generally high, and it is common to exceed 100 years.
The most typical one is an elephant turtle named Harriet, born in 1830. At the age of 6 (1836), Darwin, who traveled around the world, brought it back to England and kept it as a pet. He died of heart failure in 2006 and lived 1.76 years old. It has been certified as the oldest tortoise reptile by Guinness World Records (see the reference for data, the same below).
Besides turtles, turtles are also the longest-lived turtles. At present, there are 7 species of sea turtles in the world, mainly distributed in tropical and tropical areas. The life span of most species of turtles is close to 100 years, and the longest life span recorded in Guinness World Records is 152 years.
Compared with the long-lived turtles, the average life expectancy of freshwater turtles is much smaller, generally around 30 years old. For example, the life span of the three most common pet turtles in the market is about 20-30 years, and that of the Brazilian turtle is about 15-20 years. Others, such as snapping turtles, throats and rims, are almost the same, and they are not high. Of course, there are also some cases that record the life span of freshwater turtles for decades or more than a hundred years. It is reported that in 1954 and 1964, turtles engraved with Qianlong 12 (1747) and Tongzhi for 3 years (1865) were captured in Dongting Lake, aged 207 and 99 respectively. But overall, the life span of freshwater turtles is not high.
To sum up, among turtles in the world, turtles and sea turtles have the longest life expectancy, with an average of more than 50 years. From the recorded individuals, it is also very common that the life span exceeds 100 years, and the number is not small. The average life span of freshwater turtles is generally 20-30 years; Some individuals with strong vitality may live for decades, even more than 100 years. In other words, the so-called thousand-year-old turtle and ten-year-old turtle actually don't exist. The tortoise's life span is far from what we thought, and the longest-lived individual's life span is only a hundred years.
Speaking of this, many friends may have questions. What you said is wrong. I saw a lot of reports. It is not uncommon for turtles to be hundreds or thousands of years old. Indeed, such reports are not uncommon in ancient times or today. Give a few examples:
(1) The tortoise that "padded the foot of the bed" recorded in historical records for more than 20 years.
In Historical Records Biography of Turtle, it is recorded that an old man used a turtle to cushion the foot of the bed for more than 20 years. After the old man died, the foot of the bed was removed and the tortoise was still alive.
(2) Turtles that have been "padded" under the pillars of Guanlan Pavilion in Meixian County, Guangdong Province for more than 200 years.
It is said that a live turtle was found at the bottom of the pavilion column. Some people refer to local chronicles for textual research, and turtle was first planted in Qianlong period. In other words, the tortoise that was crushed under the big stone for more than 200 years is still alive.
The turtle recorded in the above example is obviously contrary to common sense. As turtle friends, we often encounter the situation that turtles escape from prison. If not found in time, the turtle seedlings will dehydrate to death within three days and become mummies a week later. Chinemys reevesii can last longer, a month or two or even a few months, but it will still lose too much water. Although the tortoise is hungry, it won't die if it doesn't eat for months or even more than half a year, but it can live for more than 20 years and 200 years without eating or drinking. This can only be a fantasy. So many similar records can only be regarded as myths.
Even now, it is not uncommon to find a hundred-year-old or thousand-year-old turtle on the construction site. But most of these are fake or unverifiable, and there are often snapping turtles in them. As we know, snapping turtle is one of the largest freshwater turtles in the world, and it is a famous carnivorous turtle, which grows very fast. Many of those so-called "thousand-year-old turtles" were forged by big snapping turtles.
In a word, the life span of turtles in nature is far from what we thought. For turtles with a life span of 100 years, there is still quite a lot of evidence to support it, most of which are credible. The so-called turtles with a life span of more than 200 years basically have no credible records, and their credibility is not high. So, what about the so-called "Millennium" and "10,000-year-old turtle"?
Second, what is a "turtle for thousands of years"?
In fact, in Chinese, quantifiers such as "hundred", "thousand" and "ten thousand" can refer to both content words and function words. When used for real reference, it is the number we usually understand; When it is used for virtual fingers, it is only used to illustrate large numbers. In fact, there are many such examples, such as "a thousand troops and horses" and "a hundred flowers blossom", all of which are typical empty fingers. Similarly, both the "Millennium" and the "10,000-year-old turtle" are empty fingers, which were used by the ancients to describe the longevity of turtles and turtles.
Then, since the turtle's life span is not high, only a few decades, or even twenty or thirty years, why can it become the envy of the ancients and be used to refer to longevity? In fact, just look at the average life expectancy of the ancients, and it will be clear at a glance.
As we all know, "1949, the average life expectancy in China is less than 35 years", compared with the current 77 years (data in 2022), the gap is undoubtedly very large. However, even this 35-year-old is beyond the reach of the ancients in history. According to historical research, the original life expectancy was less than 15 years old, only 18 years old in Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, 20 years old in Qin and Han Dynasties and 30 years old in Tang and Song Dynasties. In other words, limited by technology and safety, the ancients lived in a relatively low life and died at a young age, which is why they lamented that "life is seventy years old and rare".
It can be seen that compared with the ancients, the life span of turtles for decades or even hundreds of years is really enviable, and I hope to live as long as turtles. We can fill in the following scenarios:
?
Time: ancient times, location: the bank of the Yellow River, characters: three generations of grandparents and grandchildren.
One day, a teenage father was holding his three-year-old son, or a grandfather in his twenties was holding his three-year-old grandson, sitting on the bank of the Yellow River and watching the old turtle bask in the sun on a big stone in the river. Dad said to his son (or grandfather to grandson), "Son, have you seen the old turtle in front?" It lived there when it was my grandfather. It is a thousand-year-old tortoise.
?
As the saying goes, there is no harm without comparison. It is precisely because of the low life span of ancient people that the yearning for the longevity of turtles was bred, and the names "Chitose turtle" and "Long live turtle" were given to turtles.
To sum up, the life span of turtles in reality is not high, at least not as high as we thought. The "thousand" and "ten thousand" in "Long live the tortoise" are not real references, but virtual references, which are used to describe the longevity of turtles and turtles, reflecting the ancient people's good wishes for health and longevity.
Third, the conclusion
Although the tortoise has always been regarded as a symbol of longevity, its actual life span is not as long as that of China. The average life span of turtles is more than 50 years, of which the life span can exceed 100 years; The average life span of freshwater turtles is only twenty or thirty years, and their life span is only a few decades, which is far from what we thought. However, compared with the life span of the ancients, turtles are undoubtedly long-lived, which leads to the saying that "a turtle in a thousand years, a turtle in ten thousand years" reflects the ancients' beautiful yearning and pursuit of health and longevity, rather than the real meaning.
Having said that, I think of the turtle stalk that has been circulating among turtle friends for a long time: "If you raise it well, you will die." In fact, compared with the average life expectancy of contemporary people, most pet turtles will walk in front of us. As a pet owner, try to cherish the time with these little creatures. Anyway, I'm going to feed the tortoise. ...
