Harvest Festival of Lu Kai Nationality
The main crop of Lukai people is millet, and a harvest festival is held around the middle of August in the lunar calendar every year as the end of the year and to welcome the New Year. The Rukai people who left their hometown returned to their hometown to celebrate the harvest and pray for peace. Before the festival, a thick festive atmosphere hung over the village, and every household was busy sewing traditional dance clothes and brewing sweet wine with rice mixed with millet. On the day of the festival, traditional folk activities such as welcoming spirits, offering sacrifices, mountain singing and dancing, swinging competitions and parabolic competitions took turns to appear until late at night. During the Harvest Festival, baking millet cakes ("cake baking divination") is an important ceremony-take the millet cakes to a specific place (usually in the field outside the village), spread a slate on the ground, put the millet cakes on it after heating, then cover the banana leaves and press a slate. After about 30 minutes, remove the slate and banana leaves on it, and use the baked millet cake as divination for farming and hunting that year. For example, if the roast is too dry, there may be less rain that year, and the roast is warm, which means there is more rain that year. The ceremony of baking millet cakes is limited to men. In addition, there are ceremonies such as "bringing good news with spirits", "praying for souls", "praying for men" and "sprinkling holy water".
In the past, the harvest festival lasted seven to fifteen days, but later it was mostly held in one day, and most tribes held it in mid-August. Later, only a few tribes still kept the traditional "baking hexagrams", and most tribes have changed to song and dance competitions and other activities.
