Eyelid flutter refers to the rhythmic vibration of eyelids. This happens from time to time in daily life. There is a saying among the common people that "the left eye jumps for wealth and the right eye jumps for disaster", so some people stick a small piece of red paper on their eyelids to ward off evil spirits when the right eye jumps. In fact, this practice is very unscientific.

There are two kinds of muscles on our eyelids, namely orbicularis oculi and levator palpebrae superioris. When the former contracts, the eyelids close; When the latter contracts, the eyelids open. The reason why we can open and close our eyes freely depends on these two muscles. If these two muscles of the eyelid contract convulsively, the eyelid beating mentioned above will occur.

Therefore, when the muscles on the eyelids are stimulated for some reason, causing them to contract inappropriately, eyelid jump will occur. These reasons include strong light or chemical gas stimulation, neurasthenia, overuse of eyes, lack of sleep, emotional excitement and so on. After these factors are eliminated, eyelid pulsation can be improved. However, very few people have frequent eyelid pulsation, and even can't open their eyes in severe cases, and may be accompanied by angular deviation, which may be caused by intracranial tumors, cysts or inflammatory adhesions pressing the facial nerve. In recent years, with the development of neurosurgery, it has been found that the intracranial nerve roots of many patients with hemifacial spasm such as eyelid beating are compressed by curved blood vessels, and the annoying hemifacial spasm can be eliminated by microvascular decompression.
