In China, the legend of "Tiangou eats the sun" is widely circulated. According to China folklore, the solar eclipse was caused by the "Tiangou" devouring the sun. Sometimes this "Tiangou" will swallow the sun into his stomach. In order to save the sun, people will ring the bell to save it. It is said that the sound of a big horn will frighten the tengu to spit out the sun. Emperors, generals and ordinary people were convinced of this, so they gathered people to beat gongs and drums and set off firecrackers to drive away the "heavenly dogs" and "save" the sun.
