It is no wonder that Liang Qichao, Hu Shi and others equate Qing dynasty scholarship with the Enlightenment. The reason is that the Qing people dare to doubt the classics and the past and dare to oppose the tradition. Why can't this style of study inspire the radicalism of the May 4th Movement? Question 8: Seek the authoritative version of the Four Books and Five Classics. It would be best if Sishu could understand Zhu's annotations. After all, it is a unique note. The Doctrine of the Mean is the most difficult of the four books, so you can leave it alone for a while. In The Doctrine of the Mean, the words "Destiny is nature, truth is truth, cultivation is teaching" are too far away from the life of modern people. The Analects of Confucius:
Perhaps the most popular annotation in the market is Yang Bojun's Annotation on the Analects of Confucius. The advantage of this book is that it is short and pithy, without any nonsense, and its handling of text annotations is very accurate, which deserves everyone's attention. However, I really don't recommend this notebook. The reason is that he didn't give full play to the wonderful features of The Analects. Yang Bojun made a wonderful comment on Zuo Zhuan in the way of a park scholar, but it was a bit like buying a gift to return pearls to The Analects. My feeling is that although the content of this book does not seem to be influenced by the conscious mentality during the Cultural Revolution, the so-called "not talking about righteousness" is actually a helpless work deeply branded by the times, because it does not provide any inspiration for beginners.
I recommend four versions of annotations: Zhu's Collection of Notes, Qian Mu's New Interpretation of the Analects of Confucius, Shu Zheng's Shu Zheng, and Hai Baonan's Justice of the Analects of Confucius. The Analects of Justice may be too long to read for the time being. However, I suggest reading Zhu's and Qian Muhe's books together. Zhu Qian is talking about righteousness, and The Analects of Confucius is proved by facts. Reading together can help us understand the way of "being a saint inside and being a king outside".
Mencius:
Compared with The Analects of Confucius, Yang Bojun's Notes on Mencius is good. The reason is that Mencius mostly said what he should say, unlike Confucius, which was more subtle and obscure. So just pay attention to the words, there is no big problem. Of course, reading together is better than Zhu's Collection of Notes. Then, if you have free time, you can read Jiao Xun's Justice of Mencius and Dai Zhen's Explanation of Mencius' Word Meaning.
The Five Classics is really not suitable for beginners to dabble in. Even after the prosperity of Pu Xue in Qing Dynasty, there are still a lot of unsolved problems in the Five Classics. The short book (Book of Changes) reads like a gobbledygook, while the long book (Rites and the Spring and Autumn Period) makes people feel boring from time to time, and often they don't feel any gains after reading a long paragraph. The Book of Songs may be the most suitable for beginners to read, but I'm afraid it's difficult to read through 300 articles. When Dai Zhen 13 years old, he read the annotations of Thirteen Classics, which is unimaginable. For modern people, only read slowly, take more notes and take good notes.
First of all, the annotations of the Thirteen Classics must be chewed. Modern annotations are sometimes not published by the ancients, but they only add bricks to the building annotated by the Thirteen Classics. The excellent notes of modern people are recommended as follows:
1. The Book of Changes: Notes on Zhouyi by Huang Shouqi and Zhang Shanwen, Complete Interpretation of Zhouyi by Jin and Lv Shaogang, and New Notes on Zhouyi by Xu Zhirui.
2. Book: On the Interpretation and Translation of Shangshu School by Gu Jiegang and Liu Qiwei.
3. Poetry: Cheng Junying's annotation and analysis of The Book of Songs, and Chen Zizhan's direct interpretation of The Book of Songs.
4. Zuo Zhuan: Yang Bojun's Notes on Zuo Zhuan in the Spring and Autumn Period, A Study of Zuo Zhuan in the Spring and Autumn Period, and A List of Important Events in the Spring and Autumn Period.
5. Gift: The content is complicated, and good notes are all works of the Qing Dynasty. There are not many annotation books for modern people. Yang Tianyu is the author of Zhou Li Zhu, Li Ji Zhu and Zhou Li Zhu.
I study Chinese, most of which are books of our major. It is worth seeing.

From today's point of view, it certainly contains rich historical value. For an inappropriate example, there are many fake cultural relics now, which should be from the Tang and Song Dynasties. However, if you look back at these fakes after 1000 years, they will certainly be cultural relics, provided that they can be preserved, although they may be worthless today. After 1000 years, people can analyze the manufacturing level and so on according to these fakes. Therefore, truth is always relative.
