Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, one of the three martial arts schools, ordered in May of the third year of Jiande (574) that "Buddhism and Taoism should be cut off at the beginning, and shamans and Taoists should be returned to the people."

The reasons for the extinction of Taoism and Buddhism are the economic conflict between religion and feudal countries, and the struggle between Buddhism and Taoism for religious status.

It rarely happened after the integration of the three religions in the Song Dynasty. Chen Yingning, a master of Taoism, died in 1969, marking the short-term demise of Taoism.
