Six hexagrams can not only refer to the combination of six yin and yang symbols arranged from bottom to top, but also refer to the top divination in this combination, and can also refer to the method of forecasting by borrowing this combination.

The bottom symbol is called the first symbol, and the top symbol is called "six symbols", in which, from bottom to top, there are two, three, four and five symbols. Yang Yao'-'(a long horizontal line) is also called' nine', and Yin Yao'-'(two short horizontal lines with a space in the middle) is also called' six'. If the first day is Yang Yao, then the first day can also be called' Nine Days'. If "six hexagrams" is a yin hexagram, then "six hexagrams" can also be said to be "upper six".

The first one is added with two or three to form a "stubborn", which is called "inner stubborn" and also called "lower stubborn"; Four or five hexagrams plus six hexagrams form another kind of hexagrams, also called "external hexagrams" and "upper hexagrams".

Six-hexagram prediction includes two different methods: Na Jia method and Mei Hua Yi Shu method. Najia combines six hexagrams with heavenly stems and earthly branches's five elements, six relatives, gods and demons and many other factors, while the number of plum blossoms is relatively simple, mainly based on internal and external hexagrams, body hexagrams, hexagrams changing each other, and poems.

In Gan Kun Pu, Yang Yao represents the 30-day big moon, while Yin Yao represents the 29-day small moon. Do six Yang Kun six Yin and 12, representing one year 12 months.

"Shuo Wen": "You have to pay. Ruyi six. " The interpretation of Shuowen is not accurate. Specifically, the word "stubborn" formed by the overlapping of three "five" is composed of three numbers "five five five", and then the digital gossip is converted into symbolic gossip, and "five five five" is the form of "doing" from "wanting", so that the original meaning of "wanting" can be known. As far as the eight single hexagrams in the Eight Diagrams are concerned, the "Yao" glyph only records one "gan" in the eight hexagrams, which shows that the "gan" hexagram is in the primary position in the Eight Diagrams.

However, Oracle Bone Inscriptions's "hexagrams" are all formed by overlapping two "five", which is inconsistent with what we already know. Oracle Bone Inscriptions's "Yao" is the superposition of two "five", which shows that the hexagram composed of two numbers is more primitive than the single hexagram composed of three numbers. It is expounded that the hexagram shape composed of two numbers (corresponding to two pictures and one hexagram) involves the origin of hexagram, and this issue will be discussed in the next section "Sound and Meaning of hexagram".

Because the pictographic meaning of "Yao" is digital gossip, and the word "Yao" has already appeared in Oracle Bone Inscriptions, it shows that the occupation of Yao was quite mature in Shang Dynasty. The language environment in which the word "Yao" appears in Oracle Bone Inscriptions has records of things that occupy Yao, such as:
