According to historical records, the Yellow Emperor is the virtue of earth, Xia Dynasty is the virtue of wood, Shang Dynasty is the virtue of gold, Zhou Dynasty is the virtue of fire, and Qin Dynasty is the virtue of water.

At the beginning of the Han Dynasty, Qin Shuide went on to say that Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty should have been a moral virtue at the beginning of the founding of the country, and Liu Xiu should have been a moral virtue at the beginning of the founding of the country.

The tripartite confrontation between the three countries is actually the struggle of three groups of people.

The Sui Dynasty only recognized the virtue of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, that is, wood made a fire, and Sui should be the virtue of fire.

The Song Dynasty came out from the later Zhou Dynasty, and it belonged to Mude, where wood made a fire, and the Song Dynasty was a fire virtue. Qidan nationality was born in Liaoshui, that is, Shuide. Jin Zhangzong's rulers set soil morality.

The Yuan Dynasty attacked and destroyed the Jin Dynasty, and the metal soil, the five elements were born together, and the soil was born with gold, so the yuan was Jinde.

The theory of five virtues is the historical view that five virtues begin and end, which was put forward by Zou Yan, a yin-yang scholar in the Warring States Period. He used the theory of five elements to demonstrate the rationality of the new regime replacing the old regime or changing the dynasty. Zou Yan believes that from the beginning of human society, the replacement of dynasties is the result of five virtues (the virtues of gold, wood, water, fire and earth). Moreover, according to a certain order, the former is victorious and the latter is virtuous, not the other way around. This order is: earth, wood, gold, fire and water. Zou Yan endowed each dynasty with a kind of virtue, and all the institutions corresponded to some kind of virtue. The five virtues are repeated and multiplied from generation to generation, and history is deduced from this. Qin Shihuang unified the world based on this theory of five virtues. "Historical Records Zen" records: "Zou Zi's disciples wrote five virtues and the Qin emperor, and the Qi people played them, so the emperor adopted them." Qin claimed to be Shuide. According to the theory of five virtues, water virtue was fire virtue in the past, and water was better than fire, so it is reasonable for water virtue to replace fire virtue.

As for the situation of the Han dynasty, it is a bit complicated. At the beginning of the Han Dynasty, when the Emperor Gao was in power, Zhang Cang's agreement was taken as water virtue, and when Emperor Wen was in power, Jia Yi and Gong's proposal was taken as earth virtue. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty designated it as Tude. It is believed that the theory of "three unification" put forward by Dong Zhongshu in "Spring and Autumn Stories and Three Generations of Restructuring" means that business is white unification and ugliness is construction; Zhou is a red system, a scorpion; When there was a new king, for the black system, Yin Jian, "degenerated from the theory of five virtues." There is a contradiction between the theory of three unification and one theory and the theory of the end of five virtues. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty "took the original of the three unification and removed its service color, and took the original of the five virtues and removed its service color", which was compatible and included, and was promulgated by the state as a code and determined.

At the end of the Western Han Dynasty, when Wang Mang was in power, Liu Xiang and Liu Xin rearranged the order of ancient history according to the sentence "Emperor was shocked by the earthquake" in Zhouyi Shuo Gua, and calculated that Han was a fire virtue from Shennong and Huangdi. At the same time, it is concluded that divination is a false trust of the Han people.

Their conclusions are as follows: First, Wu De has always said that the order of dynasties is very problematic and should be counted from Fuxi, not Huangdi; Second, the replacement of dynasties is not a mutual relationship, but a mutual relationship. Simply put, it is no longer a new virtue between dynasties, so the spirit of war is too heavy. It should be the old virtue that gives birth to the new virtue, which is harmonious; Third, the Qin Dynasty did not rule by virtue, but by strict rule of law. At most, it is a "French" country, but not a "German" country. It can only be called "leaping reunification" and "hegemony" but not "king".

Therefore, based on these three understandings, Liu and his son specially wrote a book called The Classic of the World, which abandoned Zou Yan's theoretical framework and redesigned a more magnificent genealogical table. In this table, Tai Hao (Fuxi) is of course the first. He inherited the family business of Suiren, drilling for fire. (As for why you don't put Suirenshi in the first place, Liu Xiang probably feels that he is not fully civilized. ) Nature is Mulder; Yan Di inherited Fuxi, and the wood made a fire, so Yan Di was a fire virtue (here Liu and his son also called Yan Di Shennong); Next, the fire is born, and the Yellow Emperor is Tude; Shao Hao inherited Jinde's land. According to this rule, Emperor Zhuan Xu inherited gold with water virtue, Di Ku Mude inherited water, Tang Yao Huode, Yu Shun Tude, Xia Yujin De, Tangcheng Shuide, and arrived in Zhou Wuwang and aquatic wood, so the Zhou Dynasty was Mude. Qin ignored it, so Han inherited the Zhou Dynasty and made a fire with wood, so Han was a fire virtue. (Accurately speaking, Qin was not left out in the cold, but was changed to Jinde, which was still white, but the level was lower than other dynasties. )

Therefore, according to the divination of Wang Mang's Since the Yellow Emperor and Yu Shun and History of the Spring and Autumn Period and Jin Dynasty, it is believed that Han Weiyao and Wang Mang are Shun, in order to repeat the story of Yao Shun's abdication. Korea is a fire virtue, follwed is a soil virtue. According to the theory of five elements, it is intended to replace Han's fire virtue with earth virtue.

At first, Han Huo Yingde was only circulated in academic circles. Later, after Wang Mang used this as an excuse to usurp the throne, this theory became famous all over the world and everyone knew it. At that time, the psychology of the people in the world was to support what Wang Mang opposed, and to restore what Wang Mang destroyed. Wang Mang usurped the "fire virtue" that was not officially recognized. Instead, they recognized that Han must be Huo De, but no one mentioned it. When Liu Xiu fought for the world, his banner was to revive the Han Dynasty. In order to show his orthodoxy, I have to admit that Han is a fire virtue and has made great contributions to himself.

When Liu Xiu established the country, he became a martial artist and made Luoyang his capital. The word "Luo" in Luoyang is unlucky to be bordered by the word "water", so the word "water" was removed and the word "Jia" was added and changed to Luoyang. Next, "the suburban omen is in the south of the city, the fire is just right, and the color is still red." At this point, "Han with fire" finally admitted to the official, and the Han people became popular from then on. Later, when Ban Gu and Ye Fan wrote history, they both found it difficult to explain this phenomenon of "turning earth into fire". Ban Gu is very clever. In Hanshu, the story of Liu Bang's white snake barking proves that Han is indeed a fire virtue. Ye Fan is more honest. In the Book of the Later Han Dynasty, he vaguely said, "In the early Han Dynasty, the soil was virtuous, the color was still yellow, and the fire has been virtuous so far." He just laughed and escaped.

From then on, the Eastern Han Dynasty was called "Fire Virtue", and there was a special phrase called "Han Yan", which was recognized by everyone, but Tude and Shuide were hardly mentioned.

The theory of five virtues has evolved into two sets of algorithms since the Eastern Han Dynasty: one is the five-element winning method that Zou Yan got from the Yellow Emperor; There is also the Five Elements Method developed by Liu Xin from Fuxi. These two sets of five-virtue systems run in parallel and have been passed down to later generations. However, the method of "five elements coming together" came from behind and gradually evolved into the mainstream. This algorithm was used in many dynasties, and the method of "five elements interacting with each other" will only be remembered if the former is not good.
