The creative background of female fortune tellers

Barriol, Peroli and McKinney, three biographers of Caravaggio's contemporaries, all left a record of "Gypsy women telling young people's fortune" in this work. Peroli recorded: "Caravaggio's job is to declare that only' nature' is a model for painters, not ancient immortal sculptures or Raphael's paintings."

He further wrote: "In order to prove his declaration, he called a gypsy woman passing by and asked her to pose as a fortune teller, and then described it."
