Where are the Mosuo people in Yunnan?

Mosuo people are in the northwest of Yunnan.

Mosuo people live in the northwest of Yunnan Province with a population of about 50,000. They have their own national language, but no writing, belonging to Naxi nationality. Lugu Lake is famous for its unique Mosuo style and beautiful landscape. There are about 40,000 people in ninglang county, Yunnan Province, east of Jinsha River, and Yanyuan and Muli counties in Sichuan Province. The population of Ninglang Mosuo is 1.5 million, mainly living in Yongningbazi near Lugu Lake.

The titles of Mosuo people are recorded in many historical books with many homophones. History books and Han books call yak Qiang or yak Yi. In ancient times, Mosuo people were a nomadic people and were called yak herders.

Mosuo people's rite of passage

Adult ceremony is one of the most important ceremonies in Mosuo people's life. Mosuo 13 years old is considered as an adult. Women wear skirts and men wear pants. Children who have not been brought into adulthood are all dressed in linen robes, and the clothes of men and women will be different when they grow up. You are eligible to get married when you are an adult, but you don't get married until you are 16 years old. Many Mosuo women and men even put off their first marriage until they are 20 years old.

Get ready the night before the ceremony, and adults will play with their friends all night. As soon as the rooster crows, the ceremony will begin, and there will be a ceremony to thank the dog. The ceremony was presided over by mother or uncle. If the mother has died or has no uncle, the time for the bar mitzvah must be decided by asking Daba for divination.
