What do the three religions mean?

Three religions refer to Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. "Nine streams" are divided into "upper nine streams", "middle nine streams" and "lower nine streams".

The evolution of the three major religions

Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, collectively known as the "three religions", began in the Northern Zhou Dynasty. Buddhism and Taoism are two religions, so they cooperate with the practice of Confucian ethics. Buddhism, in particular, has also undertaken many practical functions of charitable relief among the people.
