character introduction
Zhuang Yougong is young and clever. At the age of thirteen, he read through the Five Classics and was awarded the position of Gong Sheng. After three years of Qianlong (1738), he successfully passed Shuntian Township Examination. In the second year, he became the number one scholar in Qianlong four years (1739).
According to "Emperor Gaozong of the Qing Dynasty", Emperor Qianlong once read the examination paper submitted by the examiner in the court examination on the fourth day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar in 1739, praising the examiner: "The examination paper you took this time is not used to floating, and you drafted the first one, which is very acceptable." Later, he ordered the college students to untie the papers and found that the top scholar in this subject was Zhuang Yougong from Panyu, Guangdong.
Emperor Qianlong was both surprised and pleasantly surprised, because in the impression of Emperor Qianlong, Guangdong was a "remote province". Since the Qing dynasty began to take the postgraduate entrance examination, there has never been a champion with Guangdong nationality, but I didn't expect it to appear at this time. Zhuang Yougong became the first scholar from Guangdong in Qing Dynasty.
In the fourth year of Qianlong, Zhuang Yougong was appointed as the author of the Hanlin Academy, and went into the south study, giving it a visit. When the South Study Room was set up during the reign of Emperor Kangxi, the main selection was Hanlin Bachelor with excellent academic performance. In the early Qing Dynasty, going to the South Study Room was not a legal official position, but an errand, mainly to discuss with the emperor the study of ancient books and academic culture, and to teach princes the classics and so on.
On the surface, Emperor Kangxi set up the South Study Room to learn and absorb Chinese culture better, but in fact it was also to strengthen imperial power and select outstanding Han intellectuals for his own use.
