Qiang people lived in the city before the Qin Dynasty, and Hou Jian County was destroyed in the Qin Dynasty, which was the beginning of setting up a county for this purpose. In the Western Han Dynasty, it was transferred to Longxi County, Han Jian.

During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Liang Qian and Zhang Jun divided Hezhou and ruled Han and Han. The former Qin dynasty took Han, and the state moved to Han. Over the next hundred years, ten countries, such as North and South Liang, Zhao, Western Qin and Xia, successively fell, and the political power changed several times, and the organizational system was abolished several times. From the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Western Wei Dynasty, the Northern Zhou Dynasty to the Sui Dynasty, Han Jian was ruled by Hezhou, Xingjin or Hanjian County.

The Tang, Song and Jin Dynasties were renamed an xiang (or Hezhou), and most of them were located in Bao Han, belonging to Longyou Road, Xihe Road and Lintao Road in the Tang Dynasty. From the first year of Tang Baoying to the sixth year of Song Xining (762~ 1073), the city was basically ruled by Tubo for more than 300 years.
