The theory of the Five Mountains first appeared in Zhou Li, Chun Guan and Dazongbo: "Serve the country with blood, and sacrifice five mountains." Zhou Li, now recognized as a book, was written at the end of the Warring States Period, and it was a fusion of Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Yin and Yang. Therefore, we think that the idea of Five Mountains is a kind of worship of mountain gods formed by the combination of the four gods since Shang Dynasty and the five elements concept in the early Warring States period.

In feudal times, the Five Mountains were sealed by the emperor. "Biography of Historical Records" contains: "The sky is high, and I set up Mount Tai Zen rites to worship it, which is close to the gods." In order to "report the merits of heaven", emperors often regard the majestic and steep peaks as auspicious places, set up altars at the summit and hold amenorrhea ceremonies.

The theory of Zen originated from Qi and Lu in the Warring States Period. The first person to hold a large-scale meditation ceremony was Qin Shihuang.
