Black tongue generally refers to black tongue coating. The formation of tongue coating is related to general nutritional status, saliva secretion, local blood flow and acute inflammatory stimulation. Generally, black moss is mostly related to mold infection, and some foods, drinks and bad living habits, such as bayberry, coffee and smoking, can also lead to black moss. In addition, long-term use of large doses of antibiotics is also prone to black moss. Black tongue coating can be seen in the following five TCM syndromes:

1. Gastrointestinal dryness and heat: the tongue is dark and dry, and the tongue is red. Clinically, there are symptoms such as sore on the tongue coating, dry stool and Huang Chi in urine.

2. Damp-heat connotation: Its tongue image is black greasy fur, mostly transformed from yellow greasy fur, with clinical symptoms such as loose stool, drowsiness and fatigue.

3, cold and dampness: its tongue image is black fur, the tongue is light and moist, and clinically symptoms such as chills, abdominal pain, and aggravation of cold can be seen.

4. Yin deficiency: its tongue image is black and red with fur, which is more common in patients with kidney yin deficiency or stomach yin deficiency. Clinically, symptoms such as soreness of waist and knees, dizziness and tinnitus, hot flashes and night sweats, or hunger and dry stool can be seen.

5. Kidney-yin deficiency: Its tongue picture is black with coating, thin and dark tongue body, and dyspnea and other clinical symptoms can be seen.

The appearance of black fur in severe patients is generally a manifestation of decreased stomach qi, which indicates a poor prognosis.
